One of the Most Viral Math Problem Explained

Yesterday I posted one of the most viral math problem here on steemit. I thank all the commentators on the post. Most of steemians picked "1" as the answer and I agree with them. The answer should be "1" as the answer "9" if tested in a simple algebraic equation proved wrong as I have explained below;

Please let me know if you think other way around and why?

Its is interesting to get some math practice once and a while. I use a little bit everyday but its good for my mind to actually interact with it in your posts. Keep them coming.

Thanks for your kinds words dear @nicnas. You really made my day by saying that. Yes I will keep doing more math posts.

Only speaking the truth

God bless you brother :))

The confusion is over the order of operations. Your test is flawed because you use the same order of operations that you used to come up with 1 as your answer in both tests. Each test should use a different order of operations. Hey, I'm kind of partial to the first method too, but at the end of the day, we're stuck with whatever order of operations the mathematicians agree on.

Thanks for stopping by dear @cybercranium. Can you solve that equation without distributing 2 into the parenthesis?

Hi dear @cybercranium, I am waiting for your order of operations to solve 6 ÷ 2(x + 1) = 9 and show me the answer "2".

Hi Manjit...I saw this and seriously couldn't think why this is all over the place. I totally agree with you. Rules are rules. If you bake a cake with the wrong ingredients you will not get a cake right?

Thanks Yvette! It can be argued as it is in yellow light area for that particular problem (which is not a problem itself though). Order of operations are not actually for arithmetic but for complex equations in algebra. But many people don't care about the taste or ingredients of the cake they say cake is a cake!! LOL..

The order i would use to complete the problem, prior to looking at your post is as follows:

Problem: 6/2(1+2)=

  1. 6 / 2 ( 3 ) - Start with the parenthesis
  2. 6 / 6 - Next multiply by the parenthesis
  3. 1 - Divide 6 by 6

This is the order of operation as i know it.

  1. Parentheses.
  2. Exponents.
  3. Multiplication and Division.
  4. Addition and Subtraction.

You got it right @nicnas :))
