Using mathematical language:

Maths is a language.  To be successful in Maths, you need to learn new words and understand what the word mean.  In algebraic expressions we use mathematical language.  The four basic operations are addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  Each of these operations has a symbol.

Learners can start by writing word problems in mathematical language:   

• 1. The sum of 12 and 45                                 =     12 + 45   
• 2. 14 increased by 5                                        =     14 + 5   
• 3. The difference between 62 and 48         =     62 – 48   
• 4. 83 decreased by 22                                    =     83 – 22   
• 5. The product of 29 and 13                          =     29 x 13   
• 6. One third of 9                                              =     1/3 of 9  
•  7. The quotient of 84 and 21                        =      84 / 21  

Here are some other symbols and operations that you can use in Mathematics  :

Learners can do the following activity:

Write the following in mathematical language:

1.    36 is less than 41                 =        36 < 41

2.   The product of 16 and 5     =  16 x 5

3.   66 is increased by 92           =   66 + 92

4.   The quotient of 93 and 32  =   93 / 32

5.   The difference between 85 and 15    =  85 - 15

6.   56 is less than the square of 10    =

7.  The square root of 4 is greater than the cube of 1  =  

8.   Half of 100 is decreased by 28               =     

9.  The cube root of 64 is equal to the square of 2   =

10.   The square of 8 is not equal to 16       =    

In the above examples, learners only have to write it in mathematical language, they don't need to give any answers.
