The unfortunate reality is that McConnell is much less powerful of a voice here than in the past.

Ever since Trump began attacking him, he's been deeply unpopular among Republicans. There is no clearer sign that the GOP is Trump's party than how McConnell has been rendered a persona non grata among Republicans.

I just hope he still holds enough sway with some older House Republicans that might pressure Speaker Johnson or join Democrats.

If the Republicans retake the Senate and Biden is reelected, I don't think he'll give up leadership. But if they don't retake the Senate or Trump is reelected I could see it. At least publicly he plans to remain in office through 2026.
