I discovered an interesting trend in workplaces. Snack availability is directly related to success of the company.
Allow me to explain. My first professional job, there were free snacks for employees. However, the company started suffering increased employee turnover and an overall atmosphere of negativity. In my mind, it was clear the company was having financial trouble, though upper management would never admit something like that to lower level employees. At this time of decline, the snack quality declined to more inexpensive food stuffs, or just none at all.
My parents also both worked for a larger company before it was split up into smaller companies. Well before the split, and the resulting layoffs and reorganization, the company would provide all kinds of premium snacks for meetings. Once the company was forced to begin laying off people, the snacks vanished. Are you starting to see the correlation?
It goes further. My dad’s newest job is at a quickly growing tech startup. And do they have free snacks? Yes. Yes they do.
Irrefutable evidence that the presence and relative quality of snacks made available to employees free of charge is directly proportional to the success of the company.
I call it the Snack Factor.
