Saving the NYT is not hard - it's impossible.

It’s hard to accept the inevitable death of beloved old failing institutions. Our mind sees only their nostalgic greatness, not the core hollowed out by rot (internal systemic), or mismatch with current environment that poisons them (external systemic).

I claim that such institutions can never be saved - at least not as we remember them. You can’t bring the dead back to life in the environment that killed them. At best you can re-invent them with the skin of the old and a seed of their soul.

So saving the NYT is not hard, it is completely impossible. Accepting this sad reality is the first step towards finding ways to fill its beneficial roles for society in ways compatible with the structure of the world today.
