A New Method for Treating Heart Failure: A Protein That Stimulates Myocardial Growth

in medicine •  8 years ago

Heart failure is a leading cause of disease and mortality in developed countries and a growing epidemic worldwide. It is usually treated with pharmacologic agents that enhance cardiac muscle contractility. In severe cases, it may need a heart transplant.
Scientists have identified a new cytokine protein, called cardiotrophin 1 (CT1), as a factor capable of enhancing the key features of physiologic growth of the heart tissue, including transient and reversible hypertrophy of the myocardium, and stimulation of angiogenic signals leading to increased vascularity.
In a severe model of right heart failure in rats, CT1 protein delivery decreased pathology and restored contractile function suggesting a novel treatment option for this intractable cardiac disease.
It was shown that human recombinant CT1 (hCT1) induces fully reversible cardiac muscle cell growth. Besides, hCT1 stimulates a paracrine signal to enhance angiogenesis and limit fibrosis.

Yes, as you say, it is necessary to avoid saturated fat.

The American Heart Association recommends limiting saturated fats – which are found in butter, cheese, red meat and other animal-based foods. Decades of sound science has proven it can raise your “bad” cholesterol and put you at higher risk for heart disease. (Source)
