Five years ago, the U.S. federal government shut down one of the most popular websites: Megaupload. This forced its proud founder, Kim Dotcom, to go into exile in New Zealand, where he is still working and proclaiming for a free internet.

What was Megaupload all about?

Megaupload was a file-sharing website founded by Kim Dotcom in 2005. To millions the site was a fast and easy way to store massive files online and share them with the rest of the world. At its peak the website had over 50 million visitors a day. Unfortunately it was accused of being an online haven for digital pirates and was therefore closed down on January 19, 2012. Today, exactly 5 years ago!

Megaupload 2

Kim Dotcom announced in June 2016 that Megaupload would be relaunced in January 2017. The new Megaupload service will include a Bitcoin microtransaction linked to each file transfer using a system called Bitcache. If you upload files that are popular downloads, you earn some Bitcoin. Bitcache makes Megaupload 2.0 a Bitcoin monetised file and content sharing platform.

As said, today it's exactly 5 years ago the US government seized the domain names and shut down Megaupload completely. And today Kim Dotcom posted this on Twitter:

Is a major Bitcache & Megaupload 2 announcement coming soon?

Megaupload 2:

  • 100% open source
  • No user database
  • Fully encrypted
  • No uploader IP
  • Decentralized
  • Light speed
  • Unlimited

Is not MEGA still a Kim Dotcom product?
Which will be the difference between MEGA and MU2?
It will be exactly the integration of bitcache?

Megaupload 2 will be a front end that links into other technologies to facilitate distributed cloud storage. Bitcache will be the payment infrastructure for this new service built on top of the bitcoin block chain.

Kim is an "evangelist" for mega 2.0 rather than an owner or boss as far as I can tell for legal reasons.
