I just got an email from Bitmain saying they've released the new Antminer V9-4T bitcoin miner and it's only $345 USD. The minimum order is 5 per customer and you have to order them in multiples of 5 (limit 300!) and they say the shipping won't start until after March 1, 2018.

I have a fair amount of experience with GPU mining at this point (check out my GPU mining videos on youtube). However, I haven't yet dabbled in ASIC mining. These things seem like a really interesting prospect. But they have a 5 unit minimum order (plus shipping). So that's just over $1,700 USD... for 5 Bitcoin miners! Count me in!

...or maybe not not so fast???

It looks like Bitmain is only accepting USD wire transfers and Bitcoin Cash (BCH) for these initial shipments. The email explicitly says,

"the Antminer V9 is especially designed for long-term use in fast-growing mining operations."

I wish I could more accurately assess what that means. Check out the detailed parameters / specifications at the very bottom of this post and let me know what you think the longevity and profitability of the new Antminer V9 will be. It looks to draw around 1 kilowatt (1,000 watts) and produce 4 Th/s. Check out the crypto compare projection for this Antminer V9 pointed at BTC:

Am I missing something here? It seems like it may not even be worth it to plug it in unless you're getting free electricity. Even with the price of BTC now back up to over $8k ** wipes sweat from brow ** (read my post from yesterday's Bitcoin bloodbath, The Last Really Great Crypto Sale?: February Bitcoin Crash for New High in 2018 Crypto Market Cap), it seems like the margins are still prohibitively narrow.

Get Yours! (I may have to sit this one out, unless someone can help me understand how this is a good investment):

I can imagine a scenario in the near future in which Bitcoin increases beyond $20k again and this begins to make more sense. It certainly does appear that Bitmain is branding it as the "longevity miner". I'm very curious to hear what you all have to say about it and please forgive me if I've overlooked something obvious (I'm new to the ASIC mining world).

Happy Mining!
