Christian mercy: By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life. 1 Timothy 6:19

The First Letter to Timothy written by the apostle Paul contains a series of pastoral recommendations to his beloved collaborator; in it, Paul expressed to Timothy the importance of the true spiritual goods like wisdom, perseverance, and mercy (compassion, kindness, gentleness), and how through them those who enter into the Kingdom of God, the dominion or empire of God's perfections, can correctly build their lives.
Christianity is to a certain extent and in other words a continuation of the sapiential literature, that is to say a continuation of the teachings of the books of Proverbs, Wisdom, Ben Sira, and Ecclesiastes. And it is typical of sapiential literature to teach that the apparent goods, such as money and honor, are not goals in themselves but the result of a life filled with the fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion, and equanimity) and righteousness ("Do to others what you would have them do to you" Matthew 7:12). Whoever understands this spiritual truth in his heart is a person truly enlightened by God, full of the Holy Spirit, and is thus worthy of a blessed life. And Paul's teachings, intended to make Christians true citizens of heaven and not of the world, do not forget this ancient wisdom.
This is why Paul taught about poverty of spirit, a very important gift that all followers of Jesus should keep in mind, especially the rich: "As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty or riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy" 1 Timothy 6:17.
And to emphasize this spiritual statement, the apostle Paul spoke of that hidden treasure that must be discovered by every Christian in his search for the mysteries of the Kingdom of God: "By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life" 1 Timothy 6:19. Sharing, knowing how to give with generosity and mercy to one's brother in need, leads men to the true treasure that is the contemplative life, that treasure that is revealed to those who truly love Jesus.
