A lot of metal bands use satanic ideas and imagery. Probably goes back to Black Sabbath. Doesn't mean they believe in it. I think it's partly an act of rebellion against established beliefs

That's exactly what Satanism is @steevc, it is the act of rebellion. Satan is the rebel, the other. Only very silly spiritual Satanists believe that Satan is real. Satanists simply access all sides of themselves through the power of ritual.

I think it is also because they might like HORROR stories. Those topics and symbology fit really well with such lyrics. They fit really well with the holiday of Halloween. Metal could be looked at not as Satanic, but as excitement, thrill seeking, horror movie/literature enthusiasts... :)
Unless you catch them practicing a satanic ritual, or sacrificing someone odds are very highly in favor of them not being satanic at all.
