"Día de Muertos" (Day of the Dead)

in mexico •  7 years ago

Hello Steemit friends, it's my first time and I want to introduce myself, I am Alicia Ortega, Mexican and I would like to show you the culture, traditions and places of my country Mexico, many of you will have visited it, others still not, but what I want you to know is the variety of styles, colors and flavors of food we have here, I hope you like it.

I will tell you about a magical village that was founded between 650 and 750 by the Matlazincas called Coatepec Harinas, let's see Coatepec of the Nahuatl Coahtl means Snake, Tepetl means hill, therefore it would be in the "Cerro de la Serpientes" (Snake Hill) and the name “Harinas” comes from the flour production that was carried out in the community during the nineteenth century.

Although today it must be called “Coatepec de las Flores” (Coatepec of Flowers) because of its high production.

Coatepec Harinas is located south of the Xinantecatl Volcano in the State of Mexico.dd4ce9d5b04d968527ceaf6a2d6b41cb.jpg

As here and in most of the municipalities of Mexico, traditional festivals are celebrated here and in most of the municipalities of Mexico, the settlers carry out demonstrating their identity mixing pre-Hispanic and European elements.

There are the customs of the indigenous people and in the other hand the religious beliefs that the conqueros brought us.
Day of the Dead, is a very important National Holiday because it has been declared by @UNESCO as a "Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity".

Although every town in Mexico is multicultural and multi-ethnic, it is not celebrated the same way, that's why we are going to focus on Coatepec Harinas. Here the Day of the Dead is known as "The Caps" or "New Candles" are celebrated on October 31st dedicated to children, November 1st aimed at adults and November 2nd to all the faithful deceased, on this day is where the cemetery is visited by the habitants decorating the graves with flowers celebrating them with mass addressed to the deceased, at the request of relatives, which each year have.

October 31st and November 1st is in each house of those families that a relative has passed away the previous year, an altar is made directed to the deceased placing all the things that in life he liked, preparing food, "tamales", custards, sweet bread, water, salt, incense, decorations with paper, candles, white tablecloths, flowers and the photograph of the deceased.

Coatepec Harinas as all Mexicans are familiarized with the idea of death but the purpose of this altar is that the souls take the essence of the offering to their return to the world of the dead, death is understood as a constant rebirth, called to have an infinite process, that those of us who are offering today will be invited tomorrow to the feast, of which I am proud to be part of this wonderful and spiritual custom.
