Jesus what a nightmare! If I were on his jury (if he didn't plead guilty) there's no way I would convict him. That's why I NEVER refuse jury duty.
Amazing that his family stood by him and had the means to hire a lawyer and buy him a house where he could live. If he had the family I grew up in, a broken separated family with no savings to pay for the lawyer or the house, I would never have gotten out of jail. In that situation I would have arranged to take my own life, sorry. I'm not strong enough to go through something like that with no backup. That's one of the biggest reasons I went MGTOW. I know myself well enough to be pretty sure what I'd do if I were ass-launched out of my family and my kids taken.
