Good Practices, regardless of the Diet you are On - [Microbiota Emphasis]

in microbiota •  7 years ago

In a previous steemit blogpost someone asked what would be some common good practices to follow, regardless of the diet one is following.

I made a short video reply about it. Here's what I discuss:

  • I don't know the best practices, but I know of some good suggestions
  • diets can be very restrictive and can lead to deficiencies (think of plant only or meat only diets, or other diets that focus solely on the consumption of a single food or a very narrow selection of foods)
  • vitamins, minerals, and micronutrients are important for health and can be in shortage in different diets
  • the gut microbiota or the gut flora seems to play an important role to health and to keep it healthy it's good not to be restrictive of food groups, and equally importantly (if not more) of micronutrients

Please see my entire narrative in the video below. If you have similar questions, I'd be more than glad to provide my input, so please leave them in the comments below.

Great answer to my question ;). It's nice to talk to someone who actually reads papers and digests them. The cake analogy is easy to understand. I will have to read up more on this micronutrients - gut bacteria connection to better understand.

there's a lot to read and there's a lot of hype about this. looking at it with a critical eye is a must!

I think, most we lack is probiotics. In the past we had plenty of home made sour cabage, sour turnip... now everything is pasteurized. Without consuming natural probiotics (forget what you can buy in the store) our gut flora is out of balance. Especially after consuming antibiotics. Wise old books says, sickness starts in the unhealthy guts.

@cristi .. inspirational.. i agree that it is not good to follow a strict diet regime .. coz that can lead to some nutrient deficiency for sure !

hi. I didnt say it's good or not. it could make sense in some circumstances to be strict.
