AMD or Intel, who wins and why?

I have been a long time believer in AMD (AM3+) and here is why. Its cheaper to build your own machine especially if your running on a budget. I have built numerous desktops for far less than I would if I used Intel. BUT.....they do run a bit hotter than Intel.

Intel on the other hand has a much higher price tag on it, but is a name everyone knows and understands.

Whats your opinion and what hands on experience have you had?

For a number of years it has generally been true that if you want the most bang for your buck, go with AMD. If you want the absolutely highest performing CPU around (or you are willing to pay more for a CPU that uses less power) than go with Intel. I bought a Pentium II in 1997 then every CPU after that was AMD until a year or so ago when I bought an Intel. That was only because AMD had only had very incremental upgrades to their CPUs for a number of years. They probably still offered the best bang for your buck but the gap had just grown too large in absolute performance. I think all that changes again with Ryzen which will almost certainly be my next CPU.
