The Obligatory 1,000 Followers Post!

in milestone •  7 years ago

I have no idea how this has happened, but I now have a thousand followers on Steemit.

I haven’t done a lot of milestone posts, but one I did at the 150 followers point still rings true:

150 followers, and so many questions! I could almost understand if a half dozen people had stumbled onto my posts and accidentally clicked the Follow link, but 150 of you having done so suggests that some form of mass delusion has occurred due to food poisoning, wardrobe malfunctions, or buggy software. A hundred and fifty people have looked past the fact that I've posted all over the map with a scattershot randomness? Is Follow the spelling of a word in some non-English language that would loosely translate as “Click here to make this person go far, far away”?

All these months later, and I still don’t get it. Who are all these people? Where are all these people? Especially among newbie Steemians, there’s a misplaced emphasis on trying to gain followers, sometimes to the point of an obsession. But I’ve said more than once that I’d trade a hundred followers for one engaged reader in a heartbeat. So I’ve got a supposed 1,000 followers. Subtract from that several hundred “dead followers” who haven’t been active on the site for X period of time. But depending on the time period used, that would still leave at least 600-800 nominal followers. Precious few of whom ever even read one of my posts, let alone comment and/or vote on it.

Oh, I know, we all have busy lives. But why even bother to click that follow button if you’re not going to read that person’s ramblings at least sporadically. Most of my posts get only a few dozen reads, and fewer votes. In 9+ months here, I’ve had maybe a few posts that garnered over a hundred reads but, I think, none that have made it into triple digits for votes.

Meh. I’m not a whale who can dole out $400 upvotes. I didn’t join Steemit with an instant base of dedicated YouTube viewers. And I sure as hell don’t have a niche. There are quite a few Steemians who market their “brand” quite well; I’m not one of them. But that’s okay. A few engaged readers here and there, and all is well with the world. I’m having a blast at Steemit. I firmly believe that this site in particular and the Steem ecosystem in general will do very, very well going forward.

But I do have milestones that mean a lot more to me than X number of followers. Maybe it’s just vanity, but I like that my Reputation number has been growing slowly but steadily. I must be doing something right.

And then there’s Steem Power. Oh yes, I like those milestones. @taskmaster4450 has written several posts about the 1KSP initiative, to get a bunch of Steemians past the 1,000 Steem Power mark, which he sees as potentially life-changing wealth for people if the Steem blockchain goes mainstream. I’m doing my little part for 1KSP, having “adopted” @eaglespirit and upvoting her posts on a regular basis.

So I guess that the upcoming milestone that I’m looking forward to is the 10,000,000 vests that will make me a dolphin. Probably a month or so from now?

But in the meantime, I need to work on being a better follower of those that I follow. And start adding to that list.

Congratulations on your "1,000 Followers Post". Isn't it a good thing that people - unlike dogs - don't lift their legs on one's post? One must be grateful for every little blessing... 😁

Yay, this is the great guy who adopted me! Congrats on the 1000 @preparedwombat! A goodhearted person who posts good things! Thank you kind sir. xx

I’m personally not a big fan of all these milestone posts, but I love your thought process about it all. I feel the same way.

Just keep doing you, it seems to be working pretty well :)

Congrats on the "milestone". You are right the amount of followers versus the number of reads does not compute. Of course, part of it could be the platform and the fact this is really nothing more than a stream of articles coming at people. Like I mentioned yesterday, I feel that the communities feature might assist in that since we can gather around a particular interest.

That said, we know a fair portion of the followers is exactly what you stated....people who click follow and never even read one of your articles. I think it is the same across the board. At present, I am looking to clean out the list of those I follow...a lot of dead weight in there.

I appreciate your contributions on here.

’ve noticed a lot of follower accounts that have no posts or comments yet on my account but they’re out they’re following and voting.

I haven’t been through my lost for awhile to see how many inactive and dead fish there are following me. Might need to do that this weekend...

Congrats on the 1,000 mark by the way!

Congrats on reaching your milestone! But, what stands out more to me is your philosophy, I find it to be very admirable.
Your way of thinking is very down to earth and realistic, but at the same time optimistic about what is to come and I think more people should be like that.
Congratulations again and good luck for the future :)

Congrads @preparedwombat on your 1000 posts, keep up the great work, following

I hope the target will be reached soon and this is really nice to see you gained followers with trust and loyalty. Congratulation for the milestone. tweeted the post :)

My gosh, congratulations! Well you do a lot for the community with your interesting mix of funny, wry, tirade-ish, meme-y, educational, eclectic posts, which I think can be a brand in its own right. With some people you can anticipate the kinds of things they post, and I suppose that means you might even scroll past them to something that seems fresh and different. You are always a surprise. But your voice, meanwhile, is you. I’m not quite sure how you do it, but it’s an inspiration to me and I’m sure to some significant portion of your followers who are real people. (I started looking through all my followers the other day, feeling bad that some real and cool people have followed me that I haven’t followed back, and almost everyone starting with “a” was a spam poster. Ugh. I digress)

I thank you for bringing me along with you to Steemit. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you. And you have provided so much education along the way.

It is a wild ride, and I don’t know where it’s going, but I do think that if one can invest one’s time and grow a potential long term investment risking only time and energy, and have a heck of a lot of fun along the way, that’s got to be a good thing.

Thanks for all you do.

LOL the 3rd* pic there! nice one 😂😂 huge congrats on the milestone!
