Review Of Minds.com - The Open Source Social Network Where You Can Earn Money

in minds •  7 years ago

I consider myself pretty knowledgeable about social media but this morning I checked my feed on Steemit and @rulesforrebels had a short post asking if anyone knew anything about Minds or Gab.  I had actually never heard of either one of them. Gab looks like an open source version of Twitter but the ability to have a little longer "Gabs."  It didn't look like you could earn money there.

Minds was more interesting because there were several ways you could potentially earn money.   I actually signed up and tested it out.

Ways To Earn Money On Minds.com

The Affiliate program is looking pretty generous at 25% of the revenue they generate.   They don't really say if there is a time line on that.   Can you imagine if you could earn that on the lifetime of the accounts you referred?  That would be pretty insane and I don't know if it would be sustainable because that is actually more than they keep on their ad revenue which we will go into in a moment.   Here is my affiliate link though if you are interested in signing up.  :-)

The exclusive portion reminds me of Patreon where people can support you each month but it almost seems like they will get to see exclusive stuff that won't be posted other places.   It is an interesting concept but I feel that will mainly work in a situation where you are giving money making advice like real estate or stock tips type content.  Wire seems like it is where people can tip you but upon further exploration it seemed like that is a pay wall you set up so people can read your post.   Ad revenue is interesting because the split is 80% for the creators and 20% for Minds.   That is pretty good considering YouTube's split is 45% for Google and 55% for creators.   P2P Boost sounds cool because it is basically like a sponsored resteem or retweet situation.

Monetizing Minds

So you have to apply for monetization and right away you get the ability to do the affiliate program.   You have to put in why they should let you do the ad revenue portion.   It says it might take up to 7 days.

There is a screen shot of the back end.

Points System

The points system to me seems kind of like the reputation system on Steemit or like Reddit Karma.  I don't think it will have an monetary value in the future it is just a gauge of how engaged a person has been on Minds.

It almost seems like people can buy their 10,000 points for $10 each month.   I'm not sure if this allows people to boost their posts more or what.

Ad Placement

Here is a look at a blog that was monetized on there and where the ad placement is.

Here is a look at the bottom of the post.  There are more ads down there.

How Much Can You Earn?

Just keep in mind that most ad services like this are going to equate to $1 / 1000 views.   It is tough to get that kind of traffic.  Then you are taking 80% so you will basically get $0.80 for 1000 views.   The @klye version of Minds wrote a post on there about how he was earning more on Minds than on YouTube.  Basically it looked like he had earned $3.92 in the last 7 days.

If Minds got a lot bigger and a person wanted to manage a subscriber list on there where people paid each month for exclusive content someone could earn more obviously.

Another thing I wanted to note is that they had it organized so that a blog post was different then a regular status update or tweet type post which I thought that was interesting.   Here is the blogging interface.  Kind of similar to the way Steemit is.

Steemit Can Learn From Minds and Minds Can Learn From Steemit

Minds is open source but isn't blockchain based.  Database driven sites have been around longer so there is a little more of a proven track record.  I feel that is one of the reasons why Minds has some features that would be cool to see on Steemit.   Steemit has to reinvent the wheel on a new technology.   On Minds I liked the fact that there are groups and also that you can put banner art in your profile.  It seems like simple things but people really like to have the banner art.   I felt that the layout was very clean on Minds.   Also Minds had an encrypted chat service built in.

Steemit has a huge advantage in that it has STEEM backing it and that there is an incentive to purchase STEEM and power it up.

If I Was Minds.com

  • Since STEEM / STEEMIT is open source I would take that code and launch a new crypto based on it and distribute coins to people who have a lot of points already in their system.  They could do an ICO launch and then distribute the coins and integrate the new crypto so that their user base would have an additional way to earn on top of the affiliate program, ad revenue, and pay wall content.
  • The other option would be to integrate STEEM into their existing system but that becomes difficult and they wouldn't have a huge position in it like Steemit Inc and a lot of the early founders, miners, and investors.   It makes more sense to launch their own chain.

If I Was Steemit.com

  • Look at Minds.com for some inspiration and work towards some of the features they have like the encrypted messaging app, banner art for the profile, groups, ad revenue sharing. Minds also had their own video service which is interesting but will be best done in a decentralized manor through some type of thing the way Siacoin is trying to do. It is a tough challenge.
  • I think it would be awesome if Steemit.com implements Ad Revenue in the future and then that way our content could have a way better lifespan if people are tripping across it organically from Google.   It would be an additional revenue stream for us.   People could opt out of it if they didn't want to participate.
  • Really when it boils down to it though I can manually embed code into my blog for Ad Sense but personally I would want it to show up in there 30 days after I made the post.  On Steemit it would be buried but for organic traffic coming in then it would still get the hits so it didn't piss off my followers here!

Conclusion

I actually thought Minds was interesting.   I felt like their was way more free speech on there than on Steemit.  It was almost intimidating on minds in some respects.   There were social justice warriors and white supremacist posting stuff.   I didn't agree with their posts but it was interesting to see all these different people posting.  You don't really see that as much on Steemit.   I like the Steemit community better actually from what I have seen.  Steemit is actually pretty PG in my mind and I feel that it is partially because people are afraid to speak their mind 100% because they won't get a payout or it will be like committing a mild version of Steemicide.

On Minds there were also bigger organizations like NASA which I thought was interesting.   On the flip side there were a lot of people who were kicked off of Facebook and Twitter for posting stuff that was too radical.

Personally I think that the content on Minds would scare off the majority of people in a lot of ways.   I feel that people get scared away or frustrated by Steemit for different reasons.

Ultimately right now Steemit is a way better structure if you are looking to earn money to be honest.  The one main play with Minds is the Ad Sharing but you have to get massive traffic for it to really become much of anything.

Overall Minds made way more sense than Yours Network and Synereo at this point and we can take some notes from their site.

Great review - Just checking it out today but you are 7 months ahead of me!

I saw heaps of cool art and people there have no fear of ripping into stuff like zionist propaganda - so I liked it so far

Yeah, it is a different kind of place over there for sure. And they are coming out with their own Crypto token.

Killer review BP! Sounds like a place with some potential.

You could lock down your user name at the very least. If it gets big then it could be worth spending time there potentially.

That sounds like a decent approach, and like you're doing it on that account, link it over to steemit for whatever flow through traffic may occur.

Thank you for this in depth review. For right now, I think I'm going to just focus on Steemit rather than spreading myself too thin and try both platforms.

Yeah it makes sense. It would be hard to earn much on there and plus it looks like you already know about ChainBB so you will make more posting comments on here then you would posting on there and trying to eventually monetize it.

Sounds interesting. Thought it was a new thing but it seems like it's been around for a few yrs. Not sure if I will sign up. Might as well just stay here. 😆

It makes sense if more people sign up there since Steemit isn't for those who don't like complicated stuff.

I'm surprised you found that old post. That was from a long time ago.

Because I did a search on the topic after someone suggested it to me. Is the site still good for you or no? 🤔

I haven't been over on Minds for a long time. Because they kept changing stuff and I just stopped getting on. It has probably been over a year and a half at this point.

Alright. Good to know. 👍

Thank you for your review.

What is this about... I'll sign up tonight to check it out and stalk ya. 😂😂😂

You better secure the @stackin brand or I will register it on there and sell it back to you for a billion dollars. LOL Just kidding. Hahah

Brian really appreciate this post I'm on both Minds and Steemit. Still trying to get more clarity on both. I have similar feelings about the content I've scene. A lot of the most popular people on Minds seem to have been kicked off of facebook. I shared this with a friend who is interested in both. I will follow you as well. Thank you again

Do you know what top earners and average earners are making on there?

I tried to find that out but it isn't as transparent as Steemit so I just had a couple small posts to go off of there.

I don't think it would be very good and I don't think we could really go off of people making a lot off the affiliate portion. I would be more interested in seeing what the top people were making off Adsense.

We know YouTubers are able to make Millions if they hit it right and are blogging about a subject that has a very large audience. But YouTube gets unreal traffic.

I think Minds is something to keep our eye on though.

Thank you for this review ;)

You are welcome!

Will it be able to compete with steemit?

They might gain more users but unless they implement a crypto currency for payment like we have here I don't see how the payouts would ever be substantial unless they start getting crazy amounts of traffic.

Minds has about 6-7x as many active users as Steemit

I remember over the winter when steem price was in the dime range there was a lot of talk about people switching to Minds.com, it's a lot less censored and people really can write about thing on their mind.

But it actually seems like more work to make a buck over there than it is here.

Some aspects of Minds would be nice to have here, like if I did a post about a cool solar powered gadget I have, and the put a little banner add in my post for it. Something like that.

Nice post man, got me thinking before i finished my morning coffee.

Hmmm, that is interesting that people were talking about it. I had never hear of it until today.

Yeah it looks way harder to make a buck over there for sure with the ad revenue model. Steemit's silver bullet is that it is crypto currency backed. Minds should implement a crypto and then it could have an economy like what is going on over here. Easier said than done though and the founders might be worried about the legalities of it if they have centralized servers. They might be worried it would be like issuing shares but I think the best thing to do would be to make the crypto decentralized. They could literally use the STEEM code and base everything off that since it is already a working model.

You could put a banner ad in your post for a previous post just like I put the footer banner at the bottom of all my posts on here.

I love Minds, Steemit, still having a hard time "getting" it I think lol I make sales from Minds fairly regularly, I like the fact posts with links don't get algorithmed to death like on FB.

I am on minds, but I like steemit better :) Both are wayyyyy better than FB, etc lol

That is cool you are on there. Did you try to monetize it? Did you have any success making any money?

I never tried to monetize, but I do like that you don;t have to pay to boost your stuff.

Yeah it is an interesting business model they have on there. Because it looks like people can get rid of the ads for $5 / month. Kind of like getting YouTube Red.

I joined Minds a few days ago, and while I agree that the monetization is not as rich as STEEMit, I did find the interface much easier to use. In just a few hours, I was able to get a good amount of feedback and two wires with practically the same content I have on STEEMit. I was trying to test how the whole categories and visibility thing works, and in that sense, the UI for Minds is much better.

That being said, I have still not understood how to create exclusive content, which seems similar to the Medium Partner Program. Minds is probably closer to Medium, in that it seems to have free content and paid content, though even after an hour of looking and the monetization activated, I could still not find out how to create exclusive content on Minds. Have you been able to figure it out?

Oh, and it looks like Minds is going the way of crypto. They announced in December that they will be creating their own coin for the system, moving from points to a model that is more like STEEM. From my discussions with people that use both platforms, it looks like some of the fundamental flaws in the STEEM model are doomed to be repeated in Minds. Let's hope not, because I like it.

If you figure out how exclusive content works, please let me know. I am super interested in understanding.

The best thing about minds and probably the most intimidating is you control what you see, it's not delegated to an unknown alogrithm, you can mute, block and basically choose your own content and I like that.

I would like to see it more decentralised this is my main concern is that at the moment all that has to happen for this to change is the people running it get greedy and take a several million/billion pay-out and hand over control, and beleive me it has everything people want on facebook, twitter etc in way of freedom so there will be players attempting to wrestle control of it.

This might be something that I check out, but it seems too much like a standard blog, with fewer rewards. Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a domain, put up your own ads and be yourself? I get it that you need to grow a following first, but that's what twitter, Instagram and Facebook are good for (grow your base, then monetize it).

Maybe I'm missing the idea of minds, but it really doesn't seem to have anywhere near the same monetizing value as Steemit.

Thanks for sharing, it's definitely something worth looking into!

Side-note, Steemit not having ads is a HUGE attraction factor for me .. I'm not sure if others feel the same way, just my 0.02 :)

The main thing they are trying to play on is being a censorship free place for people instead of something like facebook, twitter, or YouTube where you can be kicked off or buried for saying things that aren't politically correct.

The thing I would say about having your own blog on your own website is that it is very hard to get enough traffic to make it worth anything. Even a guy like Jerry Banfield who has a very solid audience only makes a couple of dollars / month from Adsense on his website and he has been building it for a couple of years. You can get so much more traffic where the people already are. I posted a couple of those small posts and I got 18 views on one of my posts. That isn't a lot but it is way more than a person would get in the first hour of having their own website and trying to monetize it. Personally what I have found out over the years is that a lot of these people stick to consuming content mainly on the big platforms and the hope is to pull them away to buy some merchandise or to purchase a program on your own website.

The greatest advantage to Minds is that it seems to be free thinking liberty minded type people and if a person has a topic that relates to that type of thing like cryto currencies then a persons fan base could grow from being on there.

But to be honest from what have seen the best way to play minds is to create the account to secure your user name and then it lets you link Facebook and Twitter accounts so you can just have it repost all the stuff you put on those platforms. That way you don't really have to manage Minds unless it became a bigger thing and then the focus turned to it or something.

Wow, awesome response! That all makes a lot of sense. Minds playing off FB and other platforms definitely makes the barrier to entry lower than a personal blog.
Thanks for the follow-up!

Yeah no problem! There is usually room for an under dog platform that is similar but better in some aspects but that you can spend no extra time putting your content there as well.

For instance Bonanza.com is like eBay but better in a lot of ways. It is sort of like a "Me Too" type thing but the fees are lower and you can link your eBay or Amazon accounts to it and end up getting sales there as well at a better profit with no extra work!

Can we have free subscribers like steemit does?

Very interesting! I'm sure we will here more about this in the future- let's see how you account goes on there.

Yeah I wasted a lot of time over there checking it out but in a lot ways I'm glad it is on my radar now. Steemit is still #1 for making money the fastest. Golos would probably be #2. YouTube is even more powerful but you have to do it in such magnitude there. Usually people aren't going to be profitable over there for potentially over a year.
