For my birthday, which is close to Christmas, I got a Windows Mixed Reality headset and jumped into the world of VR. I can say from my early experiences, that Minecraft is probably the best app for the Windows Mixed Reality headsets.
In case you don't know what Minecraft is, it's a game about collecting blocks and building whatever you want with them. You basically have the sandbox of your dreams. With how complex Minecraft can be, and the progression system it offers in it's main survival mode, it creates almost a training tool to help you learn the ins and outs of VR gaming.
The VR experience of Minecraft has really made me start to want to play VR games and get better with the headset. The controls of Minecraft are well optimized, and are easily translated to the Windows Mixed Reality controllers. The simple graphics of Minecraft also put less strain on the eyes, since not as much detail is needed to identify which blocks are which. These two things lead the player in to the game and make it easier to play for longer periods of time. There is even a button to switch between being in the game, and watching it on a TV in VR. The switching from VR to TV gives built in breaks for those who use the VR headset.
The actual gameplay of Minecraft is not as intense as most other popular games. However, there are still things, like high sensitivity turning, that us experienced gamers will appreciate. These aspects of Minecraft are very good for the VR experience. While playing, I had enough time to read my situation and figure out the controls to deal with it, while the game was still fast enough to be entertaining. The controls are almost exactly like the Xbox One version, so it was easier for me to learn them.
As someone who's played a lot of Minecraft, mostly when the game wasn't a full release, it's really cool to see how big the blocks, mountains, caves, and everything else is. My first experience was walking into a blacksmith, one of the smaller village buildings, and being amazed at how big it was. I dug some tunnels, and really felt the claustrophobia that comes with being in small spaces. I was even having a hard time jumping off of tiny cliffs because they looked so much bigger then they usually looked.
The VR Minecraft experience recaptures that magic that Minecraft first offered when I first played it. I have to learn how to control the game again, but my reward is the most amazing video game experiences that anyone can experience. I've spent multiple minutes just sticking my head in and out of a window just because I couldn't do that before.
NOTE: To play Minecraft with Windows Mixed Reality, I used the Minecraft Windows Edition.
