Why Is The Mining Queue Dominated By Two People?

in mining •  8 years ago

With very few exceptions, the mining witness queue is completely dominated by two miners: rabbit and gxt-1080-sc.

Last time, it was due to a vulnerability that was exploited by cycling keys or some such. Is this the result of another vulnerability? Are there any risks to the blockchain itself or the integrity of user accounts?

It's a smart person with a gpu miner. Not everything is a scam. You should really do research before writing inflammatory posts like this. The state of the mining queue is under constant scrutiny by people smart enough to figure out what is going on.

It wasn't intended to be inflammatory. It was a pretty straightforward question. And as dan described the previous exploit as a service to the platform performed by a white hat, even if it were an exploit it wouldn't imply any malicious intent.

Maybe you can explain this to me - but how is asking a couple of questions "inflammatory?" And why would asking these questions necessitate flagging?

Looks like these two miners are mining with their GPUs, which instantly makes CPU mining obsolete for the rest of us. So till there's an open source GPU miner, this'll continue to be the case.

This. They have GPU mining and are the only 1 or 2 (could be the same person) that do. There was a bounty for the development of an open source one. Not sure what the progress is on that.

This has been going on for 3 weeks?! Incredible.

More than that. Don't be surprised. There are technical barriers, so the ones have right skills and "worked" are being rewarded.

@abit replying here because of the nesting limit...

I guess it surprises me because it seems like the incentive to "catch up" to the miners that have solved gpu mining would be pretty high. Though I really don't have any knowledge of the technical barriers that you mention. Was the algorithm intended to prevent gpu mining from taking over right away?

To be completely honest, last time this happened it was an exploit. Lets hope they fix this.

Are there any risks to the blockchain itself or the integrity of user accounts?

No they are not. Even if it was another exploit, the POW mining represents only 5% of total blocks produced from the steem blockchain. It is of course discouraging for new miners to begin mining since it is not profitable for them right now.I hope/expect that will change soon due the bounty motivation.

That's a relief. Still incredible that this has been happening since August.

Look at Rabbit as perma witness, where he has been on launch :P
