Since it's abundantly clear that we have a pretty big "pro bad guy" problem going on, it's probably worth pointing out that this Minnesota duty to retreat law is probably going to have a major unintended consequence.
Violent criminals don't want a fight. Most defensive uses of firearms don't result in a shot fired. If a bad guy pulls a knife, he's usually counting on his would-be victim being unarmed. If the victim shows a gun, the bad guy is very often going to back down.
Neither party has to die.
With this new law, victims have to run away before displaying a weapon. That means that the attacker won't know that his victim is armed until the victim makes a very serious attempt to escape. I can see attackers being emboldened and pursuing victims not knowing that the victim is armed.
It's in the law that victims can't display the deterrent until they're being chased down.
Even beyond the added likelihood that victims will be killed by attackers because the law is so stacked against them, it seems like this law is likely to get more criminals killed because their victims can't show their attackers what kind of a fight they're getting into.
