Does Promotion Work?

DOESITWORK.jpg

Ok So I have tried promoting a post before and with no surprise it wasn't really a success but I didn't blame it solely on the platform. I only spent about $4 SBD on promotion and it didn't even get me close to the top of any of my post categories.
So I figured I would give it a fair shot this time??

Lets make It Rain!

Ok so I didn't go to crazy with money, plus I just started so I'm not that heavy with funds at the moment. What I did was slowly increase the promotion amount I was willing to spend to get to the top of the categories my post is currently in. I started with $8 sbd and I thought that might be enough, but wow. It only got me on the list but not close to the top at all. So I continued to pay more until I reach the results I wanted.
Here is the Post I'm promoting. (Check It Out)

Overall I spent $24.487 SBD on promotion.

What Did $24.487 SBD Get Me??

We ll it did get me to number one on a few tags so this might be enough to test this promotion out after all! I'm just glad it didn't take more then that. But note this, it still only got me to 12 place on main Promoted charts! I can't imagine how much you need to pay to get on top there??

So What Now?

Well I just sit back and watch this thing fail and I loose some good coin, or it starts to pick up and I at least get my money invested back?? I hope a post containing some useful resources for fellow steemers was a good choice for this promotion tes report series, I would assume so but. We know the old saying about that right! I will be back with a new report every 3 days to see how things are going, so if you are interested in this like I am. Stick around and maybe this will save you some BUCKS or who knows we all find out if it's WORTH IT OR NOT!

If you click the dropdown next to the payout amount you'll see how much that post has spent on promotion :

I actually made a tool when the promotion mechanic first came out to help figure out what the days promo cost would be. The earnings column has apparently broken since I last used this, but it still works for a general idea of costs :

Each time I've tried this, I've been dissapointed. We need more incentives for people to view the promoted section, or to combine the promo spend + payout so paying for promotion lifts you up the trending page

Absolutely. What if instead of paying for the promotion, the author sacrificed a larger portion of rewards to the curators? A 50/50 split would incentivize more curators and the author wouldn't require the upfront cost.

Nice idea, but we'd still need a way to decide the display order of posts as well

Good point. Maybe a combination of $ spent, account reputation and post age could determine order. This would (allegedly) give more credibility to the list.

Yeah display order is already done in a obvious way, but it makes sense. I think it should be more about getting the Promoted content in front of more viewers. They say promoted section is the highest traffic area, but I don't see where the current numbers show that as correct??
Maybe a new featured post (Ad) headliner area, they would just need to figure out, which post get ad spot and cycle times. Maybe amount put into promotion equals an amount of time for your ad to be displayed over a span of days?

That would be interesting, but I think more difficult and costly to implement than the problem deserves.

Yeah would be nice is Promoted page was more of a Paid Feature page. Put them in front of everything.

You sir are a Marter for all
I believe in the gambling phrase
"You gotta spend money to make money"
But I dont have the balls to do that here:)
Good luck to you and your endeavors!!

Thank, you glad this will become a big help!

I was wondering about this myself. Looking forward to hearing your results.

Boldly going where no Steemian is willing to put their SBD's. I hope you at least make your investment back. I tried promoting a post (with less than one SBD) and so no benefit at all. I guess I wasn't as brave as you. 25 SBD, take the dive and hope you don't hit the bottom! Steem on! @ironshield

TRUST ME I'M WORRIED! lol! Should be insightful though!

Write another post with your results! Maybe my voting power will be back enough by then to upvote you! @ironshield

will do

I've always found the best way to promote a post was to simply go around commenting on other posts. If your comment is interesting enough, then it may direct people to say 'Who is this guy?' At which point they go see your blog and are inundated with all your wild and crazy posts. Hell, it might even work. Just remember, read the post so your response is actually insightful and relevant. Can't wait to see if your experiment pays off.

Yes, I to go about this way as well. Thanks for the tip! This really helps!

You are crazy but I like ^^

I guess I am a BIT CRAZY!

I wanted to try this, but I was afraid it would be a grat fail. Thank you for taking the risk for me.

no problem! Just wanted to see how this goes!

Perhaps the minnowsupportproject is a better promotion than that promotion!

Thats how its done you have to test market ;-) Good job and thank you for sharing!

What I'm here To DO!

Test test test Thats what marketing is tweek tweek!

Looks interesting, I hope it all works out well!

I tried 2 promotions. Those posts did get a few more views. Wasn't worth it for me though.

Worth a try! I had a go in the past with little success too!
