It's a question I am often asked and one I will explain here ...
Graded coins are coins are those which have been 'graded' by a grading company - the two largest grading companies in the world are:-
NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Corporation
PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Services
Both of these companies take in all sorts of coins from both private individuals and corporations alike and apply the 'Sheldon' grading process to give each coin a 'score' or 'mint state'.
W. H. Sheldon invented the grading process in the 1940's and its now the de-facto standard for all coin grading across the word. The process looks at 70 points on each coin and awards a 1 or 0 for each point (i.e. pass or fail) for example the depth of impression may not be quite as good as it could be and this would mean for that element the coin would score a zero.
The points are then added up and a total score or 'mint state' is allocated to that coin. Therefore a coin that has scored 1 point in all 70 areas of consideration would be considered a 'Mint State 70' Coin - or MS70.
Any coin is gradeable and many collectors send their coins to be graded and certificated by the grading companies. Certification is process where after grading the grading company issues a certificate to that coin stating it has been graded and what the total mint state score is for that coin. Normally the certificate and the coin are sealed in an airtight non-resealable case once graded to prevent tampering with the certificate and any further degredation of the coin by handling (which may affect the mint state score negatively).
Once sealed in these cases graded coins are referred to as 'slabbed' coins - the coins in the image above are 'slabbed' graded coins.
The main reason behind having a coin graded to declare and confirm its condition and fineness and preserve that so that the value of the coin will rise over time. There are many examples of graded coins held by collectors that have sold for many hundreds of thousands of dollars.
