UFC 220 Miocic and Cormier put on championship performances

in mma •  7 years ago

Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier entered an elite level of combat sports history Saturday at UFC 220. A lot of folks are talking about how Miocic shunned Dana White and had his coach wrap his belt around him after dominating Francis Ngannou and there are images surfacing saying White was noticeably disturbed the Ngannou was losing the fight the way he was. Miocic has been underpromoted for a while and it was the same for this event.

If you're deep in the MMA community culture you might be a fan of Tommy Toe-hold, who put out a video before UFC 220 this week that pretty much sums up the handling of Miocic's career. One line that stands out from the skit is, "you pretty much already handed him the damn belt." So to win the way he did and at the same time, break the most title defenses for his division in the UFC made the win at UFC 220 a milestone for the sport.

But not only the promotions are guilty of getting behind the wrong guy. Fans have done it to Daniel Cormier for a while and with his win this past weekend, it looks like he is finally getting his due. I'm not sure why he got the boo's he got during the whole Jon Jones rivalry as he is a father and role model to folks in the wrestling community, an Olympic bronze medalist and Strikeforce heavyweight tournament winner. Not only did he win, he hyped his teammates Cain Velasquez and Khabib Nermagomedov for their future fights.

Lets hope 2018 brings these champs a lot of success. If you missed UFC 220 you can check out the results over at FrontProof Media.
