Google just launched a one-to-one video calling app for Android and iOS called Google Duo, and it's their attempt to compete with Apple's FaceTime.
The app is for mobile only and was built to be super fast using the advanced WebRTC real-time communications technology. It's different than Hangouts because it's only function is to be strictly a simple fast video phone app that runs on cellular or wi-fi connections.
It is available now in the Google Play and Apple’s App Store but it's not in all locations from the start. So if it's not available in your locations then just wait a few days because it's going to be a few day roll-out for worldwide distribution.
One interesting feature is you don't need a Google account and Duo doesn't use your Google account. The only thing required is a mobile number.

It will have a Knock Knock feature that will show you the person calling you on your screen before you answer. So you will see a snap shot of their face and then can decide whether to pick up or not.
Below is the official announcement from Google with the links to app stores at the bottom of the notice.

The next big thing Google will be adding is their Allo app which is their answer to WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. It will also just be a stand-alone messenger app and not anything like Hangouts.
We'll have to wait to see if users adapt to these new apps or stick with what they currently have.
