Russian hackers have ‘hijacked’ 9,000 computers and used the equipment to mine cryptocurrencies such as Monero and ZChash, Russia Today (RT) has reported, citing the findings of antivirus software provider Kaspersky Lab.

According to the yesterday report, the hackers were taking control over the computers by installing cryptocurrency mining malware on them. When installed on a victim’s computer, the malware starts using its hardware to create digital tokens. Monero and Zcash were the most popular ones due to their focus on privacy and anonymity.
Kasperky Lab has discovered that the practice was used by two hacker groups based in Russia. One of the groups has control over 4,000 computers, while the other holds 5,000, the company claims.

"According to analysts, the hacker mining network brings its owners up to $30,000 per month," Kaspersky Lab said, as quoted by RT. The company further estimates that the network of 4,000 computers has earned more than $209 000 in Monero alone.
The Monero price has seen a significant increase in today’s trading. As of 9th September 2017, the cryptocurrency was trading at $127.86, up from yesterday’s closing levels of around $121. It has gained 7.1% over the past 24 hours, according to data from cryptocurrency tracker Coinmarketcap.

In terms of trading volumes, Monero is also experiencing a significant improvement from yesterday, which seems to be driven by South Korea’s leading cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb . Its 24-hour trading volume currently stands at $137 million, with Bithumb accounting for a whopping 64% of the global market activity.
