What is BraveNewCoin (BNC)?
BNC’s mission is to get Bitcoin & Blockchain Technology mass-adopted.
With the right resources & tools this brave new digital asset & its technology will reshape the world.
With the advent of blockchain technology and the rise of bitcoin, the world now has an entirely new Asset-Class. We call these ‘Digital Assets’, which includes Bitcoin and 100’s of Blockchain-based currencies & assets.
Some refer to it as ‘programmable value’, but whatever language you choose to use, we are very excited about it as it’s fundamentally different to anything before.
Imagine using your Starbucks points to pay your phone bill or receiving a payment the instant somebody purchases your song, or book. Money should be free and easy to move. That is what bitcoin and it’s tech allows for - breaking the old redundant models and catapulting money into the digital age.
Being involved in bitcoin since 2010, we have seen the industry and technology narrative change and business applications evolve.
In 2013, the founders behind BNC realized that the first step in achieving a techno-financial revolution is education and data. Hence the ‘Bloomberg for Blockchain’ concept was born as bravenewcoin.com, with a mission to supply market pricing, industry news, research & analysis.
The BNC content strategy is simple: Quality not Quantity.
We aim for longer-form articles and avoid breaking news.
Originally, in late 2013, we scoped out our market-data solutions and established a 2+ year timeframe to build everything. So we decided instead of being ‘in stealth mode’ for 2 years, to take this time and develop a content division & healthy brand with a highly engaged readership. We’re pleased to say our audience has been growing substantially month on month and the feedback has been very positive along the way.
Moving forward, there is a huge amount of data sitting in the background not available on the website. We will endeavor to visualise this data into ‘Data-Driven-Content’, highlighting key industry trends, Digital Asset trends and analysis.
Even now, the items on the live website are extensive. If you are not familiar, please check out:
• ‘A gentle introduction…’ Series of reference papers enjoyed by many new to Bitcoin/Blockchain. Also the Bitcoin 101 resources for further basics.
• Industry Research. 100’s of PDF’s catalogued by year and quarter of published date. Everybody from UBS to PwC has produced research on the subject of Bitcoin/Blockchain.
• Industry Investment. Even with inflation adjusted, we have seen more Venture Capital flow into Bitcoin & Blockchain companies than we did 20 years ago into internet companies.
And of-course the News Section, where you can scroll through articles covering every major company and industry event in the Bitcoin/Blockchain space over the past few years.
Why is the bitcoin price different on different websites?
When you buy shares in Apple, you do so from where APPL shares are listed - NASDAQ, or via a broker who buys it for you.
This example is a very simplified version of how both retail and wholesale investors buy conventional stocks, highlighting the fact that having one source of trading, makes ‘price-discovery’ fairly simple.
With bitcoin and the other Digital Assets, there are now over 120 crypto-exchanges sprinkled all across the world.
When you look for ‘the price of bitcoin’, Google will tell you the price according to one exchange; CoinBase. This tends to be much different to ‘the price of bitcoin’ in China, which is different to ‘the price of bitcoin’ in Japan or Europe.
This is because unlike most conventional markets, Bitcoin and other Digital Assets, have independent liquidity on various exchanges, across different continents.
The price quoted on various websites differs because most sources try to treat Digital Assets like stocks - referencing one exchange. Whereas Digital Assets actually behave much more like currencies, which, in the realm of fiat, have sophisticated operators, like Xe.com, blending various rates as sourced from central banks and major liquidity venues into a unified average.
BNC employs similar strategy in our indexing engines. We create regional pricing, global pricing and also liquidity pricing to best service our customers depending on their needs.
Charts and how we love human centered design:
With over 120 exchanges and 100’s of Digital Assets we now have over 350 currency pairs (eg USD-EUR is a fiat currency pair).
The question we asked ourselves when building the new website was: “How do you create sophisticated price-discovery yet keep it simple for users to navigate?”. It basically boiled down to a User-Experience (UX) and User-Interface (UI) consideration.
This is why the website looks familiar to Bloomberg or YahooFinance in terms of UX/UI. We wanted the ability to quickly jump from ‘News’ to ‘Resources’ to ‘Markets’ and drill down quickly between coins and markets. We employed a range of tactics but mainly ensuring that any page has quick navigation to drill down or ‘Jump to’ another section. To our delight, many users have stated they have turned our Markets Summary page into their homepage.
This page first shows the most reliable price of bitcoin - the Bitcoin Liquid Index, followed by regional pricing and then global pricing for all the less liquid Digital Assets.
Website aside, we have a range of tools to help get bitcoin traded and used better.
For Bitcoin to be traded by the big institutions, it not only needs healthy and reliable trading platforms, it also needs market data.
When it comes to the traditional ‘money men’, market data is sliced, diced and licensed out as follows:
• Historical data, aka ‘end-of-day’ (1 day summary going back as far as possible)
• Intra-day data, (anything more granular than 1 day)
• Real-time (as live as possible)
• Index products (blending trading across multiple exchange by country or liquidity)
From there big fund managers, buy-side firms and a raft of other financial service companies can build risk models, establish correlation to other assets, back-test trading strategies, create new financial instruments and much more.
Getting the right tools into the right hands will bring more trading and adoption to bitcoin and the other digital assets.
This is why a big part of BNC is focused on being the leading Market-Data Vendor in this industry.
Naturally, with the programmable and decentralized nature of bitcoin & blockchain, many new applications can be developed also.
BNC has created a full range of API’s for those who need anything from Digital Currency Exchange Rates, right through to innovative new ways to discover price and automatically reconcile transactions into a USD value.
See our full range of API’s on our API page.
There is much more we want to offer through the website and many more useful and innovative services we are bringing to market over the coming months.
Our readers and data customers help us refine our products and services, so if there is a suggestion for an API, resource, research or website function you would like to see - please let us know by email on [email protected]
