The thieves work as ATM technicians and use a medical endoscope. They replace original hard disk of the ATM with a disk that mirrors the ATM’s own software. Regular customers using that machine see out of service message while thieves remotely control the machine and spit out cash.

According to the Krebs report, ATMs still running Windows XP are said to be particularly vulnerable to these attacks. In this recent US attacks, thieves are targeting Diebold Nixdorf-made ATMs. Another ATM manufacturer, NCR Corporation, has also warned customers about the potential attacks and asked their customers to remain careful.
