My First Investment (and please share yours!)

in money •  7 years ago  (edited)

There comes a time in life when a person makes their first investment. In this thread we share!

Technically my first investment was a small amount of treasury bonds that I received as a gift as an infant, with a 7% annual yield. And college was an investment technically. But today I share my first stock investment.

A little background - I was in high school when the iPhone was released. I took a stock market class that was one day a week and we all played with "fake" money. I didn't know much about the stock market but I did know that Apple was a sure winning stock. I begged and begged my parents to buy Apple but they declined. You could say my parents were very risk adverse.

So after graduating college and earning a little investment money of my own, I became aware of Facebook's IPO in 2012. I set up a brokerage account to be able to buy in when shares hit the open market. I bought some shares right when trading started, then watched over the next few days in disappointment as the share price dropped from low 40's into the 30's, where I bought a little more. Within a few months the share price fell into the teens. The biggest issue surrounding Facebook right after the IPO was a very high price to earnings ratio in the 70s, coupled with risk about the transition from desktop to mobile.

What did I do? I decided to leave it alone and not sell my holdings at a loss of 50% . I didn't break even for more than a year and it was painful to even look so I tried to just forget about it. Then in late 2013 to my surprise the share price started picking up. The rest is history.

The biggest driver of growth has always been execution on mobile and even eventual monetization of Instagram. I would've never imagined that as of today the price of Facebook shares is almost $180, 5 times the amount invested. That's the type of return that makes me come back for more.

my first investment was a pair of mice. they cost 50p each (about 65 cents) and I asked for a male & female. They soon started breeding and I converted some old fish tanks for their homes. Before long I had many mice in all different colours. It was a great time for me. I did love them, baby mice are incredibly cute but I couldn't keep them all.

I would have a litter of about 8-10 ready to depart about once per month and I had a deal with the pet shop where I originally bought them. They would buy them at 25p and sell them at 50p. so for my ten mice I would receive £2.50. mouse food mix was 16p per pound and sunflower seeds (which they loved) were 22p per pound. I would buy one of each and 1 bag of sawdust and one of straw at about 50p / 30p. My profit was about £1.50 per month. (which was about an average weeks pocket money at the time) 1982-3.. It would buy a decent amount of sweets or a small airfix model kit, which I was really into at the time.

Later I realised I could sell retail at £1. I had to raise them a bit longer but I took orders in school from every boy I knew and would bring them in a special cardboard mouse box which I bought for pennies from the pet shop. I think I sold about 40-50 mice over a period and became known as the mouse man. It was all very hush hush in school although I think some of the teachers knew ;) I was often seen with a mouse peering out of my top pocket.

I learned alot about business during that period. I was 12. eventually I let them all go near the railway enmbankment. I'm not sure if any survived for very long and I was sad to see them go, but I was beginning to get more interested in playing cards and girls.

Great story, I was not expecting that!

thanks @cryptotax it's funny.. I read somewhere that Richard Branson's first (failed) business was breeding budgies and I thought to myself my mouse business was a total success !

Nice story!

thanks @petisoparado it was a really good investment !

I bought bitcoin in 2012, at first to experiment with the few 'btc-exclusive' online markets, but quickly realized how holding BTC could be beneficial. I remember buying 2 coins, 1 for myself, 0.5 for my twin brother and best friend and .1 for each of my other siblings and parents [3 sister, 1 brother and a seperated moms and pops]

I had planned to split them into paper wallets at first, and to give them to everyone on christmas after a good few months of profit. Unfortunately between buying is when I lost my job and had a few other shitty and expensive events hold me back from financial independence.

Though it would have been worth well over $13,000 [usd] today*

Those two bitcoin I had held [and some of the profits from hedging/scalp trading btc doge and ltc] kept me off the streets well into 2014. Sometimes I'll think back on spending the coins, or on how much I could have given back to my family and I'll feel a wave of nauseous regret, but then I remember:

Crypto-Currency isn't just a phase or a singular investment event is the future of money**

I do not know and understand to much of it so i am to scared to invest. When i talk with the bank they think i should, but i do not like , not being able to really check where i invest in. I have a fake investment account from the bank where i still have profit with lindt chocolat. I like that company from bean to way they treat the workers as the product it self. But when i went to the bank and said i want to do something with that, that was not possible. I would dare invest a bit in bitcoin. But also that is from here so dubious. I think the only real investment is the house i live in.

Hi! My first investment was some years ago. I bought some stocks of an energetic company of Argentina, Pampa Energia S.A. Still holding it, even bought more. It had a price of something like 80 cts of a dollar at the time, now is a little more than 2 and a half. Didn't had the same luck with the second company I invested in, it was involved in some corruption scandal 3rd world country tipical shit hahahaha

@cryptotax I used your Genesis Mining promo code just moments ago for a Bitcoin (Pre-order) upgrade of 1 TH/s. Feel free to use my code for your future upgrades:
