Kura Revolving Sushi Bar has recently made the decision to return a federal loan of $6 million after they received negative backlash from people who say that those loans should be reserved for small businesses.

Kura Sushi is a chain of sushi restaurants, 25 different locations, and they received the money as a part of the Paycheck Protection Program which is the same sort of funding that other companies like Shake Shack have also received help from.

Multiple Returns

Shake Shack also made the decision to give their loan funding back when it too received backlash over taking the money.

This sushi chain is worth more than $80 million, they are a publicly traded company said to have tens of millions in reserves.

Another big name, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, is also under fire after taking some federal funds.

Those loans were essentially given out and designed to go to companies that hire fewer than 500 employees per location, which many multi-million dollar businesses would still qualify under. It isn't certain how many total employees the chain has, but they have closed all of their restaurants because of the virus in recent weeks.

For this sushi operation, it's reported that the have millions in reserves and currently no debt, so compared to others in their industry they might be in a better situation currently. Other businesses that are in need are still waiting for help.

The first round for those PPP funds for small businesses ran out of money in 2 weeks and there is another round coming that might run out even faster.
