ScaredyCatGuide's Random Personal Finance Tip (a VLOG entry)

in money •  7 years ago

Just a quick personal finance tip for how to allocate income, what the buckets I use are and the percentages that go toward each.

Here is what I lay out in the quick video:

Income Allocation

55% towards living expenses (mortgage, food, utilities, etc.)

20% toward long-term savings/rainy day fund (for emergencies or replacement of large ticket items)

10% for investing/passive income creation (investing in and acquiring income producing assets)

10% for fun time money (pure discretionary income to spend on anything you like!)

5% for learning and getting better (taking a class or a course, i.e, learning something new)

(I know, awesome t-shirt right?)

Note - these allocations are meant as minimum guidelines and fit more for the standard American household. For an entrepreneur or investment junkie (guilty as charged) you very well may juice up the investing percentage, for instance.

Anyway, steem on!

Good stuff. Used to be more towards those percentages and thought I would share my crazy percentages:

  • < 5% towards living expenses (mortgage, food, utilities, etc.) Room & board is offered inexchange for using my crypto knowledge to help others.
  • < 5% toward long-term savings/rainy day fund (for emergencies or replacement of large ticket items)
  • +/- 95 % for investing/passive income creation (investing in and acquiring income producing assets) This seems to be more of where @virtualgrowth lives, eats, learns, and has fun
  • < 5% for fun time money (pure discretionary income to spend on anything you like!)
  • < 5% for learning and getting better (taking a class or a course, i.e, learning something new)

Hell yeah Virtual! I was doing 60% of my income toward acquiring rental properties for a few years at one point. I like it, full throttle.

Good advice, @scaredycatguide thank you 👍

My pleasure Ms. Rose :-)

I assume percentages are after you pay taxes.

Else you don't want to be reporting your percentages on a blockchain, LOL

Haha, yeah income that one takes home. We should create a separate allocation of 1% minimum into crypto! :-)

I was going to ask if the starting point was net of taxes and dating expenses :).

As I became older, I actually downsized. No longer wanted to care for a pool, or mow a lawn. Rented a small 2 bedroom condo, and gave up my mortgage..
All the extra income from mort payments, went into crypto.

Glad I did..

Nice, many people aren't willing to downsize and often times it's the clear answer to a better lifestyle. Good for you!

Sweet shirt there my friend. Did you shave just for us? :D
Thanks for the tip. At this point, do you change how you spend your income due to change in income?

Heck, I need to shave...lol. Honestly, I've been lucky enough that living expenses were never more than 50% of my income (when having steady W2 job). I have not changed anything since striking out on my own as I built my lifestyle into that...well, maybe a few less nights partying like a rockstar, but that needed to be toned done regardless...lol.

Thank you for your tip! And Yeah, cool t-shirt haha
