Thou Shall Not Slab

in money •  8 years ago

I die a little inside when I see people slabbing "regular" coins (like BU coins with a massive/unlimited mintage).
It really makes me wonder what the mindset of the owner is - have they been brainwashed by the soothsayers who push this slabbing/grading agenda and they're hoping to sell this coin for a massive profit? Or are they trying to preserve the coin in "pristine" condition?
Either way, slabbing the cheapest, non-distinct coin on the market (e.g. 1oz Athenian Owl, or 1oz Philharmoniker, or even a 20z Queen's Beast) is madness! Like putting lipstick on a pig.
When that coin passes thru the hands of each of the 6 inspectors/assessors at the grading company, I don't think it impresses them.
" Oh look... an Athenian Owl. BU. Mintage 5 million...... Grade? 69! NEXT! Queen's Beast. BU. Mintage 1 million...... Grade? 62! NO SOUP FOR YOU!!! NEXT!!!! "

Now a decision has to be made: to go out alone, or take the family out first?
