Take What You Can Use and Leave The Rest Alone

I love this saying, I am not sure where I first heard it, but I love simple sayings that can be applied across many areas of life.  For me they morph and take on their own meanings, I use them as reminders to stay focused on what I want my life and my energy to be spent on.

This is one of my favorites:

Take What You Can Use and Leave The Rest Alone

This is what it means to me.

When receiving advice, take what you can use and leave the rest alone.  To me, it means there is no need to argue, just consider the advice whether positive or negative, take the parts that apply and leave the rest alone.  Don't dwell on negatives, make the needed changes and move forward.

When dishing up your plate: Take what you can eat and leave the rest alone.  Meaning no need to horde it all or be greedy with the best things, take what you can use and leave the rest alone.

On SteemIt, I apply it to positive and negative people.  I want to surround myself with those who can see the vision of the platform.  I don't wish to ignore the negative, I want to consider what they say, and then focus on the positive again.  I choose to be positive, it is a choice.  I don't always "Feel" positive.  I look for the positive and I leave the rest alone.  (Not always, but it is my goal)

I don't just ignore the negative though, I consider if there is any reasonable thing I can do about a bad situation.  If there is, I do it and then I try to move forward.  Sometimes it takes me a little time to get my mood in order or to shake off a negative experience, but my goal is to return to focusing on the good and leave the rest alone.

I don't lose sleep over Haejin or the trending page because I can only use my own stake to work on issues.  I think that keeping the site as clean as possible is part of my responsibility and I rest well, because I use my stake to handle my part of the responsibility.  I upvote and downvote posts every day.  That is the extent of my control over the situation.  If I feel an issue is really important I will try to use my voice to influence the situation as well.  After that the best thing I can do is contribute in a positive way, engage with others and just keep doing what I do.

Some people are wired differently than I am and when they see a problem they have a relentless focus on it and feel it is important to speak out, fight, etc.  Maybe we evolved or were designed that way on purpose.  I don't know for sure, for now I am leaving the negative alone.

Also, thank you to the witnesses and those who worked on solving Steem's blockchain issues last night and I am happy we are up and rolling again today!

I am the same way. I often think some of it is an age thing. I have noticed many younger people feel entitled/owed without offering work in exchange for their rewards. I imagine many who complain don't invest their own money, and spend plenty of time elsewhere online posting with zero compensation, yet strangely enough think they should be worth a lot of money here.

I am thankful for every vote, thankful for every person who responds to me, especially if it is a gesture of appreciation for something I have said.

As for the self voters, I don't get that anger either. It's their stake. At what point does one have a large enough stake others can act like it is theirs to dictate how one uses it? I was running around 5-10% self voting before my two week absence, but not because I am some saint. I feel it is crucial to build my circle and my strategy is votes where I feel they are justified (and still ran out of votes to quick).

Part of me hopes that some of the complainers will do well, so that they can see what it feels like to have a bunch of people come in and tell you what you should do with your OWN assets. It is so annoying. :)

Humans are VERY wasteful! :( Myself included. We should not have to work 40 hours a week but everyone loves their Mcmansions and band new cars every few years.

Having a separate account for complaining is great. Switch to and fro every now and again, then carry on with what you were doing.

Haha, great idea.

It is indeed ;-).

I am of the same mind.

In anything human or crypto-related, there will be ups and downs. There are folks with too little to fight for (or are wired for argument) who are looking for a debate to get into. It is much easier to point out faults than it is to seek a solution so you know what most people will tend to do.

Ignoring the problems is a fools game but focusing on nothing but the problems will really get you nowhere but feeling trapped.

A positive attitude is much better for the outlook.

A blindly positive attitude can be bad, which is why I focus on "selecting" a positive attitude without ignoring the problems, and I hear you saying the same thing.

zzzzactly.

I follow this philosophy too!

I don't always have time to review every post of those I follow, but the few that consistently impress me with their quality content get a place on my auto-voter list.

You made that list a while back!

I delegate much of my SP to minnowbooster because I like their philosophy too.

Unfortunately, that reduces the weight of the votes I auto-vote, but I'm consistent.

CARRY ON, my eloquent friend!

You are doing so many good things. A fairly new user who's support matters to even those of us who have been around for a while. Keep doing what you are doing!

This line made this whole post all the more relatable for me...

(Not always, but it is my goal)

I also have to confess that I have lost sleep over Haejin and what he does for this site for a while then got over it. Like I did over the trending page after seeing greed is what drives many there. Now I settle for good posts like this one and build this community as much as I can :)

The Haejin issue got under a lot of people's skin. :) In my opinion he is a big stake holder's issue, if he is an issue at all.

That's a great rule to live life by.

Sometimes it takes me a little time to get my mood in order or to shake off a negative experience, but my goal is to return to focusing on the good and leaving the rest alone.

I call this ninja minding myself.... I do it every single day.

haha, I call it reframing, but your description is more fun.

"I can only use my own stake to work on issues."

I have always argued that stressing about things that are out of our control does more harm than anything else. We have our own level of means and we can do the most good when we work within them.

This can also be applied to material issues as well. Owning things isn't as great as we sometimes think. I had a severe case of feeling stressed for a lot of junk lying around here that served no real purpose. I threw most of it out and felt great while doing it and afterwards.

I actually considered taking that to the next stage and just live on the most bare necessities.

One of my favorite philosophers (Can't believe I just said that), Diomedes, actually took that to the extreme and had a blast living his life that way.

I agree. I am currently in my 2nd down-sizing mode. All those possessions equal responsibility. I'm wanting to be free of them.

For you it may be responsibility, for me it was more about memory.

A lot of the things I threw out were old belongings of my now dead parents. While I do consider myself to have been over that, as far as one can say that about oneself, having these stay around as a constant reminder did leave its mark subconsciously.

It is very hard to change my intonation of how I read or view your posts after discovering today that you're a lady and not a man as I had initially thought. Damn. :D

Why does it matter? :)

Haha. It shouldn't and it doesn't. Just that there's a way someone subconsciously views another unknowingly, especially if the person at hand was/is anonymous. Now I am finding myself thinking you must be one of the most awsome ladies on here, and also how some of your rants all of a sudden makes sense. Damn.

lol, I've always ended up working with a bunch of men. :) I'm used to it.

I'll take that saying, rather than leave it, since the underlying philosophy is so positive and empowering, and I can definitely use it.

Stuff we can't use is a waste of time.

A similar related philosophy is "Swim in Your Own Lane."

It's pointless to try to swim in the fast lane if you are wearing water wings.

Doing our best, wherever we are in life, each day, is all we need to do. And if we all do that, the Steem block chain will derive maximum thrust from all our combined contributions. :)

That's a good saying.

I totally agree with this whatsup. The only difference is that I don't downvote. That is the only thing.

human do not want to do hard work and every one is wishing for laxouires life

This is how everyone should be going along in life keep going and use that little advice to make yourself better with time

Take What You Can Use and Leave The Rest Alone

I've always liked that too, it's simple, take what you can use, why the hell do you want something you can not use? if it is something negative and you can not use it, then it generates discomfort in you, if it is something positive, then you necessarily have to use it, because it generates something positive in you.

This is true and important aspect too, we have to concentrate on only those aspects on which we can take action because aspect on which we will not take any action is just waste of time because we will going to give stress in unnecessary things.

I really liked the example which you gave means, take that much which you can eat and that holds the great message because if we put all efforts in unnecessary stuff then we are just increasing our headache for sure and it is nothing good for sure.

Both positives and negatives happen on this Platform and it's just not about the platform because these are life aspects means we see both positive and negative aspects but we have to remember that, if we can improve it then we can take initiative otherwise you are just hurting yourself.

Wishing you an great day and stay blessed. 🙂
