Relativist: There's no such thing as a moral fact.
Me: Okay, let's circumvent the softball questions. Are you going to say that it is just an opinion that rape is wrong?
Relativist: Yes, I believe that rape is wrong.
Me: Okay. That's your opinion. Is it a fact that rape is wrong?
Relativist: There are no moral facts.
Me: So, are you going to say that it's not a fact that rape is wrong?
Relativist: I believe that rape is wrong.
Me: You already said that. We both agree that rape is wrong. You're just evading the question regarding whether or not it's a fact that rape is wrong.
Relativist: There are no moral facts.
Me: Okay, so, in your mind, it's not a fact that rape is wrong.
Relativist: (Upon being pressed) No, it's not a fact.
Me: Okay...I know you're a bad person at this point; but, how do you justify rapists being thrown in prison if the rapist believes that he or she (usually he) was morally entitled to his victim's body?
Relativist: Well, morality is a social construct. It's created by people. Since it's created by people, it's all subjected to what we create as a social norm.
Me: That's actually not an answer. If this is all a social construct, and there are no moral facts, then you're throwing the rapist in prison just because of your subjective beliefs. If rape is only wrong because it's a social construct, then you're just flowing with the tide. If it's all just a social construct, how do you justify voicing your own view? You feel justified in throwing a rapist in prison, not because it's factually, morally wrong to do what he did, but because you agree with society that he was wrong? What if society decided that rape was good? What if society decided that murdering Jews was virtuous? Societies can construct themselves however people push them -- good or bad. Are you just saying that you'll go with the flow?
Relativist: No, not at all. I have my own values.
Me: Okay, so...are you saying that your own values should come second to the social trends? Are you saying that your moral values are better than the social trends? Are you saying that your moral values should bend the knee to the social trends? Are you ever willing to say that a change in social trends is a net good or bad?
Relativist: You just haven't gone to college.
Me: Yes, I have.
Relativist: (checks out).
