The Holy Quran encourages excellent treatment of the zawil qurba (close relatives) in numerous places. Good treatment of one's relations (Silah Rehmi) has been emphasized and listed among the highest virtues in Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) traditions. A person who ignores his or her relatives or treats them indifferently is frowned upon by Islam. However, being partial or too lenient toward one's relations is not an Islamic virtue. Such favoritism or prejudice for one's relations that leads to injustice is forbidden by Islam, which considers it a form of Jahiliyah (ignorance).
