Overview
Why do so many writers spend time being bad?
Are they committed to being the best?
It's hard to accept, but all the bad writing we're bombarded with today is the NORM.
So, we ask, why is there such a huge commitment to delivering bad writing?
The answer may surprise you.
Now, imagine a life with good writing, and quite often, some GREAT writing.
Is this possible?
Well, not to be a Devin Downer or Painful Peter, but the problem isn't the writers.
We can't blame them for what they DON'T KNOW.
Or better stated, what they can't SEE.
That's right, most writers can't SEE what they're writing, and like the saying goes.
You can't fix what you can't see.
So how about this, let's put on some tea and get this out the way.
That's right, let's fix bad writing ONCE and for all.
The first fix is simple: stop writing like you're in school and write like you talk.
Introduction
It's hard to top, but a STRONG VOICE can lure in anyone, ask any woman who's had her heart flutter on a moonlit evening after hearing some cheesy lines from a book of poetry.
Trust me, a great voice works!
Ever wonder why Public Speaking pays so much?
Why not pay private speaking?
Maybe it's a conspiracy between the extroverts to get rid of introverts?
Does that seem real?
But there has to be an easier way.
Of course it is!
There are 4 levels of communication regarding writing:
Communication
Great Writing
Good Writing
Bad Writing
The first level, communication, is very generic and empowers the writer, but not the reader.
The second level, great writing, empowers and imbues the writer with Godlike power and the piece resonates with the reader so well that it becomes Mythology.
The third level, good writing, invigorates the writer and delivers the reader with solid material.
The fourth level, bad writing, is prevalent today. It hits all the right points and does everything "by the book" and on the surface, is correct.
However, being right is a HUGE misnomer.
In this case, the writer is using facts, but not exercising truth.
Now that we've identified the four, let's zoom down to quantum level and go in-depth.
Communication
The goal of communication is to be transparent and let the message resonate.
However, this sterile approach allows you to provide your meaning to the target, but the message is diluted and doesn't deliver the PUNCH of an inspired piece.
KEY MESSAGE - The message is one color and monotonous/monotone - and boring!
Great Writing
In Biblical fashion, the body has all the requirements, but until the divine breath and soul enter the body, it's a husk with no humanity.
This divine breath has been called many things:
The controlling idea
The Metaphor
The Moral Premise
In #1 above, the writer delivers the piece with the intent of higher meaning and this passion allows the piece to blossom and inspire an audience (#2).
KEY MESSAGE - When you write with a targeted focus, your passion inspires your audience!
Good Writing
Good Writing is identified by delivering its message (#1) and somehow retaining the correct message, despite the contextual problems (#2) as it engages the audience (#3).
KEY MESSAGE - The absence of a Moral Premise allows contextual issues to confuse your audience.
Bad Writing
In great writing, we have two transitions between writer and reader.
In good writing, we have three.
As shown above, in bad writing we have 6 transitions.
Let's look at these more in-depth.
The first issue is the meaning is obscured and doesn't retain the power of the original thought and this is symbolized the lighter shade of green. (#1)
The second issue is the contextual problems from the meaning. (#2)
Remember when people mention that someone is taking something out of context. The graphic above shows EXACTLY how this happens. In #2, the meaning is taken out of context and this is shown by the blue gradient in the box, symbolizing the colors being mixed together and causing confusion.
As they are taken out of context a second time (#3), symbolized by the lighter shade of blue, meaning loses its power from the writer and it transforms into interpretation (#4).
In #5 and #6, we see the confusion mounting from the writer's original meaning into the way it speaks to the audience. To symbolize this issue, the graphic shows each successive step with a different shade of color and a different geometrical shape.
KEY MESSAGE - The wriggle room of lazy writing brings confusion, mixed metaphors, and contextual errors.
Solutions
How do we fix bad writing?
We use three tools.
They are the Moral Premise (MP), the POV (PV), and the Jigsaw Puzzle (JP).
The first tool (MP) involves finding what's missing, that's right, finding your SOUL.
What is the SOUL of your piece?
Without a soul, the piece has no inner core, nothing DRIVING the point home.
So take your time and figure out the Moral Premise (MP).
The second tool (PV) is divine in nature.
Some think of the POV as viewing the Moral Premise from different angles, but they are wrong.
POV is not an angle, it is an angel.
And just like an angel, it delivers a divine message.
Now that you have a soul and the right angels backing you up, it's time to VIEW your piece.
The third tool is the Jigsaw Puzzle (JP).
You take your story, shift it around and shuffle it around over and over. . .
Keep doing this until the story chooses to live and starts breathing on its own.
So how do we go from piece to masterpiece?
We go piece by piece.
Bad writing is sticky, soupy, subpar.
It suffocates by shouting.
It stifles sages.
It saddens saints.
That's not where you want to be.
On the other hand, great writing is seamless, silky, and sequential.
It sprouts, it sings, and it soothes.
It seasons.
It serenades.
And now you have the right tools for great writing.
So go back over that piece you put in dropbox from last week.
Whisk it into shape with the Moral Premise.
Whisper and wield the piece's POV.
And finally, wiggle the words until they grow wings and gently whisper.
Isn't your time worth a warm welcome of greatness?
Can you wow them with your wit and wisdom?
You can.
And you WILL.
