Morocco's Minister Delegate for Budget Faouzi Lekjaa said on Friday that the earthquake that hit the country had damaged some 2,930 villages of 2.8 million people in the High Atlas Mountains.

The 6.8-magnitude quake struck on Sept. 8 and killed more than 2,900 people, mostly in mountainous areas that are difficult to reach due to their mountainous nature and rugged roads.

Lekjaa told parliament that at least 59,674 houses had been damaged by the quake and that 32 percent of those houses had completely collapsed.

‏He added that the government will provide 2,500 dirhams ($244) a month over a year to help families affected by the quake, in addition to 140,000 dirhams to compensate families whose homes have completely collapsed and 80,000 dirhams to families whose homes have been partially damaged.

The quake, the deadliest in Morocco since 1960, destroyed a number of small communities built of traditional mud bricks, stones and wood, a hallmark of the Amazigh language Atlas Mountains.

The royal court said on Wednesday the kingdom planned to spend 120 billion dirhams over the next five years as part of a post-quake reconstruction programme.
