Most mothers face twinning with alternate feelings. On the one hand, they rejoice for the growth of the family and on the other hand, they care about care and proper nutrition. With a little patience and exercise, as well as with the support of family members, even breastfeeding twins or even multiple parts, it's not a problem.
The births of twins are not so rare. In Switzerland, around 1500 twins are born each year. We answer the most frequently asked questions about twin’s breastfeeding.
Will I have enough milk for both of my children?
In short: yes. Just like after the birth of a single child, his body will adapt to the needs of the infant. The hormones will be more stimulated to release more milk, so you should not be afraid of not being able to breastfeed the twins simultaneously.
Fixed or nursing timetables at flexible hours?
Try to be flexible. Certain regularity is certainly an advantage for his recovery, but also tries to adapt to the rhythm of his children. In particular, in the beginning, they should be fed when they ask for it so that milk formation can also be stimulated. After a few weeks, you usually manage to have a regular rhythm with breaks of three to four hours.
Can I attach both children to the breast at the same time?
If children accept it, they can also nurse them at the same time. The "rugby position" is considered particularly enjoyable by many mothers. Experiment the different breastfeeding positions very calmly, until you find the most comfortable.
Do I have to attach each child to the breast on the same side or is it better to alternate?
Every mother makes her experiences, if it is better to always give the breast to each child on the same side or if to change every time. If the babies are breastfed one after the other it is advisable to change breasts even while nursing each child, to avoid a mammary engorgement and save the nipples.
