Why do I Write on Steemit?

in motivation •  7 years ago  (edited)

I tried to introduce some of my friends to steemit and I usually get the feedback, "Green, if it'd involve writing count me out. I am not a writer." I always reply, "Neither am I." Whenever I say that I get this question, "How can you say you are not a writer, I visited your blog and saw some of the articles you've written?" I still maintain that I am not a writer.

In my first week or is it the second week here, which seemed like eons ago, I joined the PAL group, that was mentioned by an awesome steemian. I suggest you join too if you are yet to. I went to the writer's server and submitted my written work for appraisal. They have some kind-hearted folks that were helping wannabe writers get their act together.

When the result came out, it was looking bloody. The red used to underline parts that needed work on were just too much. I nearly gave up at that stage. But then again, I remembered that I am not a writer. What's the worst that could happen? Nothing. So I continued to write.

Now to the question why do I write when I know I am not a writer. Well, the answer may sound like a cliché, but it's the honest truth. I write because I find writing therapeutic. In the past, I have always written things on scraps of paper that get lost with time. Then, I was nursing the idea of being an author. But life happens when you are busy making other plans. So the idea of being an author was dropped.

Every day, I like to write down things that happened, whenever I do that, I find myself reliving the moments. Whenever I had a shitty day, I return home and write about the good days. I always end up feeling good. I wanted to start a blog but it was too complex and the idea of paying for hosting and other whatnot associated with blogging, made me change my mind.

So you can imagine my surprise when I was on YouTube and saw a promo video of a guy talking about steemit. He said you get paid to blog and own a free blog! The offer sounded almost too good to be true. But like someone that loves new things, I signed up for steemit. It had been an amazing journey, ever since.

Now, steemit can collect my scraps of stories, scribbles, true-life adventures (some sounding stranger than fiction), other trivial, and keep them forever. Does that not sound like something everyone should do? Like I said in my introductory post, I am an uninhibited person who likes to write on a variety of areas, including things like the reason the sky is blue.

Yes, that is true. Sincerely, I would still be writing on steemit even when the reward is reduced or removed. I know some may have doubts on the last part. But that also is true. It may only reduce the motivation to write. But writing is something I'd always do. So, do you feel like I do? That is, a person that writes without the flair of Mark Twain? A "non-writer" that writes.I would encourage you to write. Even if not for anything, but for the sheer joy of it.

Or, are you the writers that we all look up to for motivation? Go ahead and do your thing. Steemit is tailor-made for you.

Please do leave comments below. Criticism of this writeup is welcome too. It's odd that almost everyone agrees on things on steemit :) It's almost surreal at times.

Much love from @greenrun
still running :)

Document over creat..GarryVee. The best way to give out always is to document the happenings instead of always trying to create something that will be 100% yours.. And steemit makes it a win win show there are many ways to post.

Thank you very much arizonawise... Though I didn't understand the first sentence.

I mean that you could document..that is puting out what is already there in form of writing..creating. Just like @stellabelle said, writing is thinking out loaud and you don't create your thought but they come to you and you can put them down..document.

Ok, it's now clear. Thanks for the clarification.

Yes I'm a writer, but deep down I'm an editor. It's always a struggle for me to do a first draft. But then comes the fun.

That's super, so between writing and editing, which do you find to be the harder one to do?

Definitely writing. Especially fiction. I spend a lot of time staring at a blank page. 😅

But since joining Steemit, it's been getting easier. I try to post at least a few times a week. Still not a lot of fiction, but at least the other posts are getting me in the habit of writing.

I think that Stephen King has some excellent advice about writing: Affix ass to chair.

Since it's Stephen King, I'll take the advice. Lol

I am with you, @greenrun. I never considered myself a writer either. A few years ago I found myself jobless and in a desperate need for money, so I applied to like 300 jobs. The only one who would hire me, hired me as a writer. I was very confused, because at the time, I never considered myself to be a writer.

Writing is just thinking out loud on a computer, or a piece of paper.....so thinking is the main key....people don't realize this.
Anyone can be a writer, since we all think.
Now, to choose the right words, without fluff...that is difficult.
The truth is, I would be here writing without rewards too. I did so on Medium for years, no pay. Mixing real money with writing is a like a dream come true, so I am still here, blinking my eyes, making sure this is all still real.

I think you are one of the best writers on this platform, mainly because you have very little ego. I like the way you think. You're not pretending to be someone else. I think if you wrote a book, people would read it.

Wow. I'm literally smiling reading this. Wow. Thank you very much. Do you draw too? That's something I couldn't do, even though I wanted to. But I used to draw while little. It's crazy to be given the job of a writer, especially when you have zero experience. How did you cope? I know the first month would be super crazy.

yeah, I draw, make music, videos, collages, basically everything creative...here is a collage I did of myself not too long ago:

The drawing on my neck I did....then I added all the different elements...it's kind of like drawing. i have many drawings I've done over many years...i need to dig them out of my Facebook photo albums.

What do you use in drawing this? Paint or digital painting? Wow. You are multi-talented. It's only my half brother that could draw. I so wish I could draw, because I see images to draw in my mind's eyes. Lol

Well, even though i said I wasn't a writer, it is the truth that I have always written journals and letters to people. When i was a child, i had over 20 penpals from around the world. So, nearly every day I wrote a letter to someone. In truth, I never changed. I am still writing letters to people (in the form of comments on Steemit). I always loved the world, and its people.....so I wrote letters to them.....
I learned while being paid as a writer that i have an innate ability to observe the world and write about it. I am quite introverted, and very happy just observing the world. That is one of my favorite things to do actually: observe and think! Steemit allows all of my passions to coexist, but at my heart, I love expressing myself creatively, and inspiring others to be themselves.

You have twenty penpals?! That must keep you very busy. And I bet they must be from different countries. The postman would recognise your house as the house that has the biggest number of mail inflow.

I had. Only when I was a child did I write to over 20 penpals...yes they were from all over world...most in Italy, Austrialia, UK, Japan, Sweden, France, etc..

Ok. You had. Great times I bet. Those are exciting times. Waiting to see the contents of the envelope is joy personified. People hardly write letters by mail except for official business. Any other non-official one, is to shoot the person an SMS.

I had an uncle who's a professional writer. He likes to always go out and sit a little apart from people while he observes them and writes. It used to appear a bit creepy to me. But now I understand what he is doing. He's just seeking for an inspiration by looking at people and things around him.

I wonder how many catch the skull in the background, and the nature of rebirth that seems to be happening.

Face it. If you love to write, would write for free and already have a blog, you are a writer. Don't let anyone tell you any different. And the more you write the more your "voice" will develop. Steem on!

Thank you for the advice. Lovely username. I like it.

Nicely said, and I agree whole heartily that writing is therapeutic.

I thought I was alone on this.

In the past, I have always written things on scraps of paper that get lost with time. Then, I was nursing the idea of being an author.

I am glad you are still nursing that Idea, sometimes it takes a lit bit, but eventually "Ideas" like everything that gets nursed, from squalling infant, to tiny acorn seed, grow up and bare fruit. In less than a year greenrun, you will have enough little stories to collate into a book. Title Life in Nigeria with Greenrun" subtitle an anecdotal view from a storyteller.

That's true. Ideas are bulletproof. They don't die. That won't be a bad idea. Let's keep steeming and see what the future holds.

Like they say "Time will tell". Remember Isaac Asimov started out with short stories in magazines, then tied them loosely together, and thus "I, Robot" was born.

Never knew the writer or read the book but I love the movie starring Will Smith.

It's really important to have at the back of our minds that we should never be afraid to write badly for the first time. That has always been the force that holds people back, not wanting to make mistakes or be chastised. Except, a total liberation from that force, one will still think of oneself as a non-writer.

Some are just too afraid to write. I wonder what the phobia is for. I guess it's to do with the belief there are "special" people whose job it is to write. I still believe anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new. Thanks for dropping by ✌️
