GOAL SETTING 101: THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE YOU SET GOALS (PART ONE)

in motivation •  6 years ago

There are certain things that you should know before you bring out your pen and paper to start setting goals. We all have different reasons for not setting goals and this could be as a result of either a past experience, ignorance, unwillingness, or lack of proper motivation.

Hi there and welcome to my blog today. It is another beautiful day and as you know it, Mondays are usually for articles that are channelled towards Self/Personal/Business development. Today we would be looking at certain things that you should know or consider before making a list of goals. I hope you learn something new at the end of this, enjoy.

WITHIN, THEN WITHOUT

Many of us would already be familiar with the portion of the Bible that says “…As a man thinks in his heart, so is He...” The reality of this saying is that you can actually tell how people think by looking at the conditions surrounding their outer lives and vice versa. Many people who in their hearts are optimistic, goal driven and future oriented tend to live happier lives than those who don’t. This is of course one of those reasons why people should look forward to having goals.

Aristotle once said that the ultimate purpose of aim of the human life is to achieve your own happiness. Every human is driven towards the direction of what makes them happy. People tend to get happy when what is happening in their “without” is in line with what they have planned or envisioned “within”. Since humans are naturally goal/achievement seeking and also beings that are so much concerned with their happiness, it tend means that we should learn and consider setting goals that are in line with what would make us happy ultimately.

Our inner values should be in line with our goals in life. Many people often do not chase their dreams or their set goals because they have no form of deep connection with their goals. This is mostly as a result of lack of proper connection between a goal and a sense of fulfilment or happiness. It is therefore necessary that one must take his or her time to build clarity upon which values would make them chase a particular goal, or set of goals.

BE CLEAR ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT

I don’t want to sound too religious here but the Bible also says something about a man who is “double minded”. According to the bible, any man who is double minded tends to be unstable in all his ways…or more some of them.

Outside the bible’s teachings, it has been proven over time that Focus and Clarity are needed in order to see result. A lack of decision is almost as bad as a wrong decision. A great person once said “he, who fails to plan, plans to fail”- there are so much truths in that last sentence. Too many people work hard or get busy with so many activities that at the end of the day they don’t get the right amount of joy, satisfaction or a sense of fulfilment from their accomplishment. This is mostly because the inner man isn’t in sync with the outer man.

It is always best of evaluate and examine ourselves from time to time. In this process of evaluation, we should determine what core values are important to us and what we really want to achieve with our time and energy. Too many people spend so much time doing what wouldn’t bring to them any form of fulfilment and this is often due to their inability to choose what really matters to them and what doesn’t.

TRUST YOURSELF

How often do you listen to that tiny voice in your head telling you to make a move? Self trust is one of the foundations of greatness. Your ability to listen to your own voice is paramount in the journey of success.

Men and women who have achieved greatness in life were at some point known for listening to their own voices. Many of them paid so much attention to their intuition. Is it important to trust and be guided by our inner voices because at the end, everyone is solely responsible for themselves and their actions. You cannot attain responsibility if you are the type that listens to their inner voice or what people may term as “guts”.

While living in alignment with your core values, is it foundational to use learn to pay attention to your inner voice. In a world where many people get discouraged because there is no one to discuss with or share their goals with, it is therefore relevant that listening and communicating with yourself would be a key character that you would need in order to stay in line with your goals.

That would be all for today guys. I would continue this conversation next week or maybe within the week. I remain your favourite steemian @morgangreat
