I remember growing up and getting involved in countless fights because of an insult. I will never forget an event that happened back them. A lady insulted me in class (we were in primary school then) and i was so confident that i was going to beat the living day out of her. My plan was to patiently wait for the closing bell to sound and then meet her on the way to her house and beat her up.
Well, it happened...wait...not the beating but the sound of the closing bell. I was in front with some friends who were already igniting the fire and i pulled my shirt, dropped my bag and a very few seconds later I was crying and screaming she had plugged her teeth to my stomach and was beating hard. I never even had a chance to hit her.
Those who were expecting me to beat up the girl joined in laughing. I shamefully went home with my skin peeled from her teeth marks...poor thing!
Fast forward, i realised that most time it wasnt the insult BUT the ego we believe we have. Our pride have let us down in the areas we thought it would not fail us. Our egos have been deflated too soon. Only because we believed in a lie.
Many of us grow on a persistent feeling of ill will or resentment towards others because we were insulted. What level of bitterness have you placed yourself because of what someone said?
Now, see Alan Cohen's advice...
...Agree only with the truth about you, and you will be free.
People are at liberty to use their speech the way they want and you are at liberty to believe what they have said about you or what you know about you.
At the end, you response will be based on whose report your believed - yours or theirs!
Remember,
It is not insult from another that causes you pain. It is the part of your mind that agrees with the insult. Agree only with the truth about you, and you will be free. Alan Cohen
