The Usual Suspects

A few resourceful criminals get together

I think the best way to review this movie is jump straight into the story line, so here it is. After a truck hijack "the usual suspects" are rounded up, arrested, and held without being able to see legal counsel. This sort of action does of course tend to upset people, maybe not the best thing to do to criminals who are a little smarter than your average burglar.

One of the guys Keaton (Gabriel Byrne) does manage to get his bail posted the next day, as a result keeping the rest of them McManus (Stephen Baldwin), Hockney (Kevin Pollak), Fenster (Benicio Del Toro), and Kint (Kevin Spacey) was no longer warranted, so they are all released.

A short time later the group plan and rob a jewel smuggler being driven around in taxi type service by corrupt cops. This is something that Keaton knew as he was a cop previously. The end result of there actions is not only to steal the gems but to also alert the press to the police escort for hire, a bit of an embarrassment to the force.

It is after this job that they meet a lawyer called Kobayashi, he tells them that they have all stolen from criminal mastermind/overlord Keyser Söze. He is a Turkish crime lord with a legendary reputation of being able to reach anyone anywhere at anytime.

Söze is someone that you never, ever cross unless you want to die. Kobayashi tells them that they are only alive because they didn't knowingly steal from Söze. Kobayashi then "offers" (not that they can say no) them a job. The job is for them to invade a ship manned by a gang of Argentinian drug dealers with whom Söze is competing and destroy $91 million worth of cocaine on-board, they can keep any cash they find.

What could possibly go wrong when you are trying to invade a heavily armed ship and take drugs from the people on board? There are only two survivors, Kint (Kevin Spacey) and one person from the boat whom is badly burnt, whom may be able to identify Söze. Hence the FBI have been notified, they have an ongoing investigation into Söze, and one agent starts to interrogate Kint as the other survivor is still unable to talk.

Kint, however appears to be well connected as almost all charges are dropped and he is essentially given immunity. The FBI agent states however that this means nothing to him and wants answers, so Kint retells the events that lead up to the explosion on the boat.

I won't go any further in case you haven't seen the movie as there is a twist at the end, I didn't see it coming. Kevin Spacey plays Kint to perfection, and I believe he won an Academy award for his role. This is a movie you will watch at least twice, once before you know the twist, and then again after you know what is coming.
