Suicide Squad - Movie Review

Never in my life have I ever seen a movie so average and... "Okay". How was the action? It's okay. How's the story? It's okay. How is Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn? She's okay. How's Jared Leto's joker? Actually pretty bad... but that's beyond the point. David Ayer is one of my favourite filmmakers and he always brings a unique vision to all his films. Whether he is writing or directing, you can tell that David Ayer got his hands on it. This on the other hand, I can barely see it. This really feels like he had a vision to begin with and started filming with it in mind but once Warner Brothers and DC saw how successful Deadpool and Guardians of the Galaxy were, they quickly hopped into the editing room and tried to create their version. What came out was a mess. Guardians of the Galaxy had a great soundtrack with great songs from the 70's and Deadpool had it's fair share of pop songs too. So, what does Warner Bros. do? They slap in the most cliche and overused songs in such a small space to work with. Normally I love awesome soundtracks in films, but this felt so forced. When one minute you hear, "Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival" and the next you hear, "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap - AC/DC", you feel like the filmmakers think you're an idiot and can't pay attention to anything on screen without something "cool" happening to draw you away from your smartphone. Now, what did I like about the movie? Will Smith was alright. Didn't do anything too amazing but he was kinda cool. The stuff with Batman was awesome, as always (#AffleckBestBatman.) Viola Davis was pretty sweet (even though the whole plot is her fault) and Margot Robbie was a pretty good choice to play Harley Quinn... and that's about it. Throughout most of this film, my mind was drifting elsewhere and I almost dozed off. That's not a good sign. Overall, this film feels like a movie made for teenagers who shop at Hot Topic and really don't watch that many movies. With the over usage of pop songs, mediocre action, jokes that didn't always work, and the same ending to every single superhero movie ever with a giant blue laser blasting into the sky, this film feels like a bad version of Guardians of the Galaxy. Sorry DC, don't blame Rotten Tomatoes for the bad reviews, blame the re-editing by the studio executives trying to simply copy the Marvel formula. You're not Marvel, do something different.
