CLOSE YOUR EYES [Willing 2002] - movie review by Mandibil

Apparently the movie has also been promoted with the titles "Doctor Sleep" and "Hypnotic". It has no connection to a book by Stephen King also titled "Doctor Sleep".

A hypno-therapist, Strother, is asked by a female police-detective, Losey, to assist in getting a girl to talk. She managed to escape a serial killer who tattoos his under age girl victims, but now she has stopped talking. She slowly opens up and soon he is as emerged in the case as Losey. As they get closer and closer to the killer, a picture of the occult emerges and he looses sleep at night as he gets more and more afraid of am attack on his own family.

This is a classic sort of pseudo film noir, mystery murder case. It has all the classic characters. The young and handsome doctor, who is doing justice on his own, the detective, the incompetent police force, the mystical serial killer, who paints secret symbols in his living room, a map with a pentagram and so on and so on. It is very much a series of well tested cliches that makes up this movie. In my world it just manages to hang together, in a way that makes it watchable. Visnjic is not the greatest actor, and the detective Losey, played by Henderson is even worse. It is heavily plot driven and that gives it an unnecessary frantic and stressed feel. There a several interesting locations used, that could have been used to take the speed of the plot down a bit, to create some needed atmosphere. And then there is the nagging wife. Oh man, how many times do we need to have the wife presented this way? It is one of the worst cliches and it turns me off every time.

If you are bored and need to see a flick, that has a somewhat gripping plot and bit of suspense, but does not demand a lot from you, this might be something for you. Seen with artistic eyes, this leaves a lot to be desired. There is no real development in the characters stories, which all in all makes it a rather mundane experience.
