The Slow Death of the Transformers

Remember in the Last Jedi when Luke said the Jedi needed to end? I really think Optimus should have said the same thing in Transformers The Last Knight. The looming release of the Bumblebee stand alone movie this December dredged up memories of all of the great Transformers memories I had growing up and what a sad state the franchise is in today. I mean in the last four transformers movies it seems like Transformers where bolted on to a generic action movie as an afterthought.Transformers have taken a back seat in their own movies. Hell, in Transformers Age of Extinction they did away with transforming for some altogether and turned Megatron/Galvatron's transformation into a bunch of CGI blobs flying around on screen. They hyped the Dino-bots on every poster and they only showed up for maybe 5 minutes at the end. The people making these movies obviously don't care about Transformers and the sad part is people still go in droves to these movies overseas so they won't stop making them despite declining US returns. It is time to let this poor battered franchise rest. Its deviated so far from the original things that made Transformers fun to watch I really don't think they can recover.

I went into the Last Knight optimistically and was disappointed again. Is it really too much to ask to just see some robots have a cool fight? Not hours of boring human side characters and plots that go nowhere. Megatron tries to do something bad and the Autobots stop him, its not that hard people. I want to see robot dinosaurs battle a giant made of construction equipment not listen to Mark Whalberg heavy breathe into the mic. The new franchise has been sliding down since the second entry(assuming you even thought the first one was good, which is debatable). Just let it die so someone who actually wants to make a fun transformers movie can get the licence.

Maybe Transformers 1986 was lighting in a bottle and we won't ever see a mix of great effects, score and clever writing like it again. I know Hollywood will milk every last drop of money from the licence before they finally let it rest. Unfortunately I think we have a long bleak future of these movies ahead of us. There never was much hope, just a fools hope.

I carry a piece of paper in my wallet that explains why it's okay for me to repeatedly fuck the Transformers license.
