In Baltimore’s streets, where shadows stretch long,
A story unfolds, a dirge, a song.
From Homicide’s lens, a mirror held high,
To truths that sting and questions that pry.
A boy in KISS paint, a porch, a gun,
A life cut short, a nation undone.
Hikmet’s name echoes, a ghost in the fray,
A symbol of fear on a fateful day.
Three voices rise, a Rashomon tale,
Each truth a thread, each thread a frail
Attempt to unravel the knot of the night,
Where fear meets bias, and wrong feels right.
Jim stands accused, his soul laid bare,
A father’s slurs haunt the stifling air.
“Was it the gun, or the hate in my veins?”
He asks, as the courtroom erupts in refrains.
Pembleton probes, his words like a blade,
“Would they cheer if the victim’s shade
Were lighter, brighter, less foreign, less green?”
A question that lingers, sharp and unseen.
Tim’s loyalty wavers, his rage breaks glass,
A moment too loud, too harsh, too crass.
Yet even in flaws, the story persists,
A dance of despair, of clenched fists.
Stan’s musings linger, a philosopher’s creed,
“Is my green greener? What do we see?”
Perception’s a prism, refracting the light,
Distorting the wrongs, obscuring the right.
Three decades on, the echoes remain,
In Stand Your Ground laws, in systemic chains.
The colors of justice, still blurred, still stained,
A nation’s subconscious, still unrestrained.
Oh, Homicide, your vision was bold,
A tapestry woven of truths untold.
In the shades of green, where the shadows play,
We’re left with the questions, the price to pay.
