The Bad Batch on Netflix: All Star cast, but pretty average

in movies •  5 years ago

I was always watching a lot of Netflix but now that it is strongly encouraged that we stay in our homes as much as possible, which I presumed is happening for a bunch of you as well, I have really been diving in to the ol' Netflix library.

Imagine my joy when I found out that Keanu Reeves, Jason Momoa, and Jim Carrey of all people worked together on a dystopian thriller film.

As always I try to avoid spoilers but if you want to go in blind just know that I think this film is slightly above average but not fantastic

At the start of the film "Arlen" (Suki Waterhouse) is dropped off in the desert and ordered by some sort of official to proceed forward in the distance. It isn't clear as to why but basically it is where the undesirables are banished to. It doesn't take long for the lawlessness in whatever this place is to take hold as she is almost immeidattely kidnapped and has 2 of her limbs removed by a cannibal camp in a pretty gruesome fashion.

All you "no spoilers!" people take it easy, this happens in the first 5 minutes of the movie and is clearly spelled out in the trailer. She manages to move further down and makes her way to a "city of sorts" called Comfort, an area where some level of order exists under the leadership of "The Dream" (Keanu Reeves.)

So Momoa gets introduced into the mix because he is not a resident of "Comfort" but needs to infiltrate it for a reason that I will not reveal. It's interesting enough and of course it gives him a chance to be shirtless for almost the entire film.

I was looking for Jim Carrey throughout the film but it wasn't until I read the credits that I realized which person he was in the film. He has no dialogue, and doesn't look like Jim Carrey at all. Since Jim has had a string of bad luck in films as of late since he refuses to do the silly types of movies that will make money, it was kind of interesting to see him take such a role.

Now despite the Mad Max look and the pretty great cinematography, for the most part, this film is actually, and unfortunately, kind of boring. It is also plagued a lot with unexplained impracticalities such as access to electricity, ammunition, and gasoline, that I suppose I should have just switched off my brain and accepted.

That trailer is wonderfully done and certainly enticed me to watch the movie, which, don't get me wrong, is still decent but I think that given the amount of star-power that is in this thing, and that it is a type of movie that we wouldn't really expect these stars to take on, I was perhaps expecting a bit too much. I am impressed that the movie was made for a mere $6 million though.

Should you see this movie? I think so. However, I would be surprised if many people walk away from it feeling any differently than I do. It's just OK but because of the big names involved we might be setting the bar unrealistically high.

My overall rating! 5.5 / 10

So is it kind of a grindhouse sort of movie? It kind of has that feel from what you are saying and what I am seeing. You almost feel like Danny Trejo should be in it somewhere :) I have been reporting to work this week, but next week I am going to be off all week. There is no doubt I will be digging deep into my Netflix queue the next two weeks!

I wouldn't say it is grindhouse, it has no comedic element to it.

Okay, good to know. Thanks for the info. You doing okay with all the chaos that is happening. Based on your posts it doesn't sound quite as bad there yet.

I watched it a few days ago and found it to be just ok. I think that I ended up feeling the same way as you when I expected more out of the top 3 billed cast members. I'm glad i watched it still.
