Is this another "Jaws" or "The Shallows"? Welcome to the new summer tradition of shark related horror fests

June 16, 2017 is the slated Theatrical release date for "47 Meters Down", the newest entry in the "Jaws" spawned "You'll never go in the water again!" horror film genre.

"47 Meters Down" stars Mandy Moore, Claire Holt, Yani Gellman, and Matthew Modine (Full Metal Jacket, The Dark Knight Rises). The premise of the film is as follows:

On the rebound after a devastating break-up, Lisa (Mandy Moore) is ready for adventure while on vacation in Mexico. Even still, she needs a little extra persuasion when her daring sister Kate (Claire Holt) suggests they go shark diving with some locals. Once underwater in a protective cage, Lisa and Kate catch a once in a lifetime, face-to-face look at majestic Great Whites. But when their worst fears are realized and the cage breaks away from their boat, they find themselves plummeting to the bottom of the seabed, too deep to radio for help without making themselves vulnerable to the savage sharks, their oxygen supplies rapidly dwindling.

So as it might appear, 47 Meters Down maybe taking that tense claustrophobic "I am trapped, what do I do...SHARK! SHARK! approach but with a brilliant thrill seekers twist plotline that may actually create compassion from audiences towards the main characters (a needed spice in all horror films). I haven't seen this yet but I am intrigued and may have to catch the first run showing of this when it releases next month.

Here is what Brad Miska of bloody-disgusting.com had to say about this film:

"Fans of shark survival horror movies are going to love In the Deep (original working title, now officially 47 Meters Down), which is vastly different than The Shallows. In fact, they compliment, if not juxtapose each other into the perfect double feature. With Shallows, Blake Lively is trapped on a rock outside of the water with a great white shark circling to attack. In the Deep takes viewers to the bottom of the ocean floor with many other dangers, while sharks also happen to be swimming around. They’re two completely different beasts that both have their fair share of suspense."

So far it looks like this maybe a fun summertime horror thrill ride to check out, seems to have a fresh out take on films of this genre and may just rekindle what "JAWS" started back in 1975. I will keep you posted on this film and more.
