By a mix of their own doing and overly sensitive conservatives, Disney has had it rough in the past few years. But through it all, they have been able to produce what they do best: animated movies. Encanto is such a product.
Follow the Madrigal family in Colombia. Since the grandmother had a miracle happen to her during a (true-life) civil war, they all have some kind of talent that helps their community. Everyone... except Mirabel (with the green glasses). And it seems that she's cursed.
In the tradition of animated movies for children (with a morale), this is an excellent modern movie. Under the seemingly perfect façade of the family, people are struggling with the pressure of being perfect, flawless. It's especially true in Hispanic families, where abuela (matriarch) holds tremendous moral power over the family.
Speaking of culture, Encanto easily beats Coco when it comes to culture celebration. It has songs in Spanish (thankfully subtitled) and, according to my husband, is "Colombianly" correct and on-beat. Although he didn't like the magical aspect. As if miracles happen...
Nevertheless, Encanto is a good animated movie. It has relatable situations, beautiful animation and music and endearing characters with more than one dimension.
