We knew that this is going to happen, but now it is official: Captain Marvel is getting a sequel. However, for a movie that made a billion dollars at the box office it sure took a long time for a sequel to be officially announced. I think part of the reason is how much drama occurred around the first movie. Some people really hated Brie Larson, although her many fans came to her defense. Some people really hated the movie and tried to tank it on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie in the end wasn't bad by any means, but it wasn't one of Marvel's best. It was just a fun slightly generic Marvel movie. It helped that the movie was so close to Avengers: Endgame and was rumored to be connected. Plus, Captain Marvel herself was totally awesome in Avengers: Endgame which helped the Captain Marvel movie as well. Also, it had a cat as main character, who didn't love that? Having Nick Fury was also a fun plus. But Marvel needs the billion dollars magic to happen again.
Looks like Marvel prefers to take the more cautious side of matter and they basically got rid of the entire creative team of the first movie. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck who directed the movie are officially out, as it was announced that Marvel is looking for a female director. It's now a trend that all female action movies must be helmed by women directors, but so far the results are pretty good so no arguments there. But if Marvel is looking for a female director why not Jennifer Kent? She was considered for the first Captain Marvel, but didn’t make the cut, I hope that this time she will. A lot of directors make the jump from horror to comic book movies and she can be a splendid addition to that tradition. The Babadook is still one of the best horror movies of all times.
It is rumored that the movie already has a screenwriter, Megan McDonnell. If that name doesn't mean anything to you, you're not the only once. She is currently doing her first writing job, on the Wandavision Disney+ show. Disney and Marvel must really love her writing. They'll probably bring someone else later on to do some extra work on the script and the new director will probably have a say in it as well. However, this means that there probably be some connection between the two projects.
As Captain Marvel 2 is now officially set in present day, Carol Danvers could join S.W.O.R.D. Or Captain Marvel 2 could set up an A-Force movie which will have the Scarlet Witch in it, or just actually be A-Force with a different name on the title. Although, let's face it, after that incredible post-credit scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home everyone just wants to see a Secret Invasion movie. It's big enough for an Avengers movie, but Captain Marvel is already in with the Skrulls so why not let her have that plot? Maybe she can collaborate with the now grown up Monica Rambeau who is set to debut in her older version in the Wandavision series. Because apparently Carol Danvers doesn't age in the movies. Maybe they'll be two superheroines kicking ass together. The options are endless and they all sound intriguing and just super cool.
I am excited to see how this movie takes shape. It has a lot of pressure on it, because as the previous movie made a billion, this movie has to make the same if not more money. But I have a lot of faith that Marvel will make this movie totally awesome. Do you feel the same way?
