The Golden Globes – A Big Night for Bohemian Rhapsody

I didn't watch the ceremony because of the time differences, but when I saw the winners, I was super happy. Yes, I am talking about Bohemian Rhapsody and Rami Malek as the winners for Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama. Sure, I would have been happy for Black Panther to win Best Motion Picture – Drama, a win would guarantee that it will enter the Oscar race, but I am super happy with Bohemian Rhapsody winning, it really deserved it. The critics mainly snubbed the movie, but Golden Globes are voted by foreign press association. They seemed to support the fans who wanted Bohemian Rhapsody to win over A Star is Born. Heck, Lady Gaga didn't even win Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama as she lost to Glenn Close. Now please give Glenn Close an Oscar, not because her movie is good, but because she, as an actresses, deserves it. Lady Gaga did win Best Original Song - Motion Picture, so she has this small consolation prize.

Unfortunately, I don't think Rami Malek will win an Oscar, that honor will go to Christian Bale who won Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, but a nomination is still an honor. On the ladies side it seems that Emily Blunt can't recreate the magic that Julie Andrews had and she's not going to win any awards for Mary Poppins Returns.

Another pleasant surprise was seen in the Best Motion Picture – Animated winner, where the much deserved (from what I hear) Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won. This breaks the streak of Disney/Pixar wins and I hope it will be the case at the Oscars as well. This is another big win for Sony and their Spider Verse, a win which started with the success of Venom.

Green Book is now a real contender for Best Picture at the Oscars after this win. I am not sure Bohemian Rhapsody will even get a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars. Regina King winning Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture was a nice surprise and I hope she takes home the Oscar as well, it doesn't seem to be a competitive year anyway in the Supporting Actress category. Mahershala Ali winning Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture is nice as well, although it is difficult to imagine the Oscars giving him an awards two years in a row.

Another strange thing to see was that Alfonso Cuarón winning Best Director - Motion Picture even though his movie is not nominated at the main category, but won Best Motion Picture - Foreign Language. It is very strange. Also, this is a huge win for Netflix as their movies seem to be upgrading themselves in terms of prestige and popularity. They are in it to win, and mostly win against Disney and their streaming service.

At the TV categories there was some nice surprises like Sandra Oh, Richard Madden (forever Robb Stark proves that there is life after Game of Thrones and Michael Douglas. There was also an unpleasant surprise in the win of Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television where The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story won. It's disappointing because from what I understand the show had nothing to do with reality, which caused me not to watch the show.

What do you think about the win and how the Oscars are shaping up?

P.S. from what I understand A Star is Born has always been an awards contender, but never a winner and it seems that that hasn't changed.

I'm surprised Black Panther did not fare better, but I love Bohemian Rhapsody. but, but, I love Black Panther. I'm glad I don't have to decide who gets which award!
Thanks for the write-up. I fell behind reading your posts during NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month, an annual November event), but I need to start catching up now.
Happy New Year. :)

Happy New year to you too! I am not surprised that Black Panther didn't win. Awards hate blockbuster movies.no matter what. But a nomination is also respectable. Very very respectable.

Malek was not that good.

As far as I can tell he wasn't up against anyone too impressive. Bale was in the other male category. He was good enough for a Golden Globe in my opinion.

oh, the queen movie ... yeah

Green Book looks interesting to me

I couldn't beleive how dissapointed i was in Roma ... just too dull

I didn't watch Roma, could barley survive the trailer. It got what it was made for, respect for Netflix.
The Queen one is one of my favorites from last year, because it has Queen songs obviously.
