Caring for the self plays a key role in society & our history. If you look at where we are today, a lot of it has had to do with incentives to look out for oneself & one's tribe. Throughout history people were never completely selfish as to be completely selfish would lead to an individual being ostracized along with a lower chance of mating & survival. If you look at the incentives, you can see how people will behave. The problem is not with people being selfish, the problem is how people are incentivised in modern day society.
